This early to late 911 is about 5 years old. The 992 is bigger as you can imagine.

That's the trend with cars. Getting taller and larger.

Personally, I think bmw have a flippin' cheek calling 'it', a MINI, and could be accused of misrepresentation.
Sir Alec would probably be horrified.

Due to the malnutrition of and after the war years in Britain, perhaps that tiny mini would have sufficed.

People today are for more overfed, I think.

All cars have become larger but this comparison from a 3 series to an X is kinda ridiculous. Old 3 to new 3 would have been better and showed that they are in fact a lot bigger but this is apples to oranges.

The current 3 series is a tank compared to the original!

Although I completely agree with your opinion, I still want to add my thought:

At the time when BMW invented that beautful car on the left, no one could have imagined that in a few decades they would produce a main battle tank class monster. And most of all, no one would have thought that we would call this size and shape as "normal". Mostly in the middle of the so called "let the Earth be super green" ideology era...

Haha yes.

I am a big BMW guy, or was. I had an E46 M3 up until about a year ago, my wife has an F80 M3. It always amazed me when I would wash them how much larger the F80 was compared to the E46. The G80 is even bigger.... there is no doubt they are making all cars bigger these days.

I drive a 330e for four years. Loved the car, but sadly the PHEV only held about 8km of charge in the dead of winter here. PHEV had along way to go in cold climates

People are “bigger” …

I would love to see a side-by-side of the first Escalade vs the current version which is crazy big.

I was just about to say this, we (well, at least Americans) are bigger (and fatter, me being a case in point) then ever, that probably drives a lot of vehicle designs to follow suit.

Size in auto/suv segment is like an arms race. Bigger physical characteristics help garner higher safety ratings in collision tests.

Gen1 mini owner vs lorry was never a fair match

Design, and driving dynamics. What a fun car!

Electrics were for crap though.

Shoot, a Gen1 mini versus a shopping cart was not a fair match either. That was one tiny, light little car.

Of course, back to the original post, that behemoth SUV can run rings around that little old 3 series, more power, better handling, safer, better gas mileage and has a better stereo. Of course, to be fair, much of the better handling is largely due to tire technology, although it does also have stability control and traction control and ABS and all the other things that help.

We won't even get into the bluetooth, Android Auto, parking assistance, automated cruise control, lane keeping, navigation, etc....

One wonders how we were able to drive and navigate the roads of the world pre 2000 without all those bells and whistles.

One thing that did happen is that people drive far faster and with more recklessness now than back then. When you can't feel the road, going fast feels like sitting on your couch watching video games. Also with Suvs and monster trucks you feel invincible.

True that. I remember back when I got my first car with ABS (also, coincidentally, a BMW) and I felt invincible. I could stop on a dime and give you 3 cents change. I could slow down while turning!

Eventually I learned that you cannot break the laws of physics, regardless of how expensive your car is.

98% of the people out there have no idea of what their car is capable of, what it feels like (and why) when the stability control kicks in, or ABS, or most of those things. Until the airbag goes off. "Oh, I guess I was going too fast."

I like that they are making vehicles "adult size" now.
