Gray Market Markup

Greetings all,
I'm currently on 2 waitlists for a 116610LN. Haven't been on the lists long but I'd like to have/wear and enjoy my new watch (this is a replacement for a 16610M that was stolen while I was on vacation).

Question is, obviously the new price for the 116610LN is $8950+tax (about $9600 where I live). I've seen BNIB watches from $11000-$12000 both here on TRF from trusted sellers an the large Gray dealers.

Is a $1500-$2500 difference worth it just to have the new watch now instead of waiting a few months? I'm not sure and I'd like some opinions.

Thanks,
Al

Do you mean 116610LN?

Only you can decide if waiting is worth, or if it is better to spend the money.

For me, I would spend more and save my time. Life is short.

It’s your finances friend and only you can make that decision. However, I have seen plenty of 116610 for <$10,000 on the for sale section here.

Yes, getting the watch on your wrist and enjoying it has value. If it didn't, we wouldn't be buying them at all.

The watches I'm seeing for under $10,000 are well used versions with scrapes, scratches and appear to have been used hard for their short lives. I'm not concerned so much about their mechanical integrity, Sub Dates can take their fair share of heavy use - just my philosophy is that if I'm going to pay new prices I'd like it to be in new condition.

Personally, I have enough watches and don't need one bad enough to pay over RRP for one. For your situation, you're the only one who can answer that - a function of how bad do you want it (time) vs. how much are you willing to pay (money).

Your watch is becoming more and more available for a short wait.
Re-knock your ADs doors and get one new to you name.

I would wait. This isn’t like a Daytona or Pepsi. Even if you have to wait it might not be that long. Or you can always make these grays an offer of say 500-700 above retail.

Did you go into the AD that sold you the watch with the police report and the insurance check and ask them if they can help get you one ASAP. If you have any kind of a relationship with them I would think this would help. Personally I could wait 2-3 months if they said they would come through for me.

Patience is a virtue...and the best things are worth waiting for. Some would say patience is a waste of time so its a matter of importance to you...

Curious to know how your watch was stolen on vacation and where it happened. We get so many is it safe threads. Some insightful experience would be helpful.

In the future I would insure my watch for the market value rather than the msrp. My insurance company Chubb allows this. I have my my BLRO insured for $18k so I could replace immediately from a preferred grey.

Be patient and wait. It took me 14 months to get the watch I wanted and the time seemed to have flown by. It’s also comforting knowing you didn’t overpay....

What is 1k or 2k difference on a life time enjoy ?

Why on earth wait a year to perhaps safe this small amount is beyond me. In between a price increase and you end up paying same

Apart from that I don't want to kiss up an AD, begging to get on a list, no guarantees about delivery time. Pffff.
I am not suitable to deal with this all too shady AD nonsense

You say that about ADs but you’ll buy from the same gray market Guys buying from ADs? Hypocritical if you ask me.

No, I don't think that is the definition of hypocrisy. ADs are telling us that in order to buy a Daytona we will need to spend $100K on gold and various undesirable models... and then we can wait 6 months for the watch we want. On the other hand for a $10K premium we can flip ADs the bird and enjoy our time and money saved.

If you're not in a major market with hundreds to thousands of millionaires competing for the same watches this may not apply to you. If you lived in Vegas or LA you'd have to help the Rolex GM with a flat tire on the interstate to get a BLRO in 3 days.

It's amazing how many people on this forum don't understand this simple idea. Mind blowing.

I paid a premium of $850 for a black ss sub which isn't much but I would have rather have waited for a new one because it would be nice to go to the AD and have my name on the warranty card as all 3 of my Rolex I bought gray.

That's not to bad of a premium to have something the next day or that week compared to months or a year in some markets. Everyone has a different situation and I bet you enjoy wearing it!

What Paulsky says. Try "the offer method" and see what the gray says. If it is no, tell them to call you back if they change their mind. You might even give them a little kick in the butt by mentioning that these are beginning to show up irregularly at some AD's and "maybe I'll wait and see."

The gray's cannot sit on these over-inflated non-sellers FOREVER. And as stated elsewhere by many members, this watch is becoming much easier to find of late through AD's.

Worth a try - no skin off your nose.

If you don't have other watches to wear and this one is your first Rolex, I say why not. Just go for it.

If you have others to slot in for the meantime, then you can wait.

There is some truth to this; the angst in getting into the market is definitely worth considering. I'd rather pay the premium than sit and wait endlessly for years potentially, or worse yet, just laughed at when you're trying to spend 10k on what is (at the end of the day) just another frivolous watch.

Just wait and stay in touch with the ADs. Subs aren't rare or limited and the wait shouldn't be that long.

There is absolutely zero guarantee on the timeframe, so you can't honestly say you will be "waiting a few months." As a matter of fact, neither you nor even the AD can tell you how long it will be. The AD can't provide any guarantee of timeframe as it gets what it gets--and then make phone calls. The 116610LN might never ever be available from an AD again, and the list for the 126610LN might be many [read: nobody has a clue] months.

In your situation, I wouldn't go grey, for the following reasons:

1. Your timing to get one is opportune with the coronavirus lessening the demand, and in turn, letting ADs sell them a little more frequently to offset their risks.

2. You're close to Cleveland. No offense to the North Coast, but it's not going to yield the same cut-throat markets as, say, NYC or my hometown of Chicago.

3. The new Submariner Date will likely feature a new movement, and in turn, I expect Rolex customers to want those. A 2019-2020 model will probably cost a bit less and/or ADs will want to offload them.

Its only a watch. Waiting a few months is no big deal. Anybody here every get a custom rifle built?? A year if your lucky. With money up front.

And try selling a custom rifle for what you paid. Price drops worse than a BMW.

Just go gray and enjoy your watch tomorrow without all of the AD BS that so many seem willing to tolerate.
