The white date hand does have the exact same ”issue” as OP pointed out on his 5164 though? As in unfinished sides. Feature, not a bug.

Just my opinion, but I think most watches will not have the edges/sides of the second hand mirror finished, it would not be practical for a mass-produced watch, even a Patek.

If you get a good 10-15x loupe you will also see the edges of the hairspring are not finished as well, again IMO this is perfectly acceptable on a mass produced $30k steel watch.

@The OP enjoy your watch, it's a great reference.

I think it is less with the need to finish the sides than the inherent nature of paint on a tiny object. I don't think you can get rid of those stray specks of paint on such a small scale.

According to another commenter, OP's photos were using a 20x loupe.

The new Grand Seiko movements have solved this, btw.

The new mobile phones (iphone 13pro, etc) have superb macro performances. I suspect it will put pressure on the finishing departements of watch brands.

BTW, Stern said that the aim of their new building was not to increase the production quantities but increase the quality of the final products. Let's see...

I wanted to get to the bottom of this once and for all, so I took out the electron microscope to look at the hands on my Patek.

This is under 1000x magnification. Oh the horror, I don't think I can accept this!

“You wouldn’t have this problem with a Grand Seiko. It would still look perfect under this level of magnification,” some GS fan, probably.

This video is interesting about the aquanaut and the finishing (the macro is superb): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5hbaLL2vSI

Whatever the reviews, it is an amazing watch (I would love to add to my collection).

Pretty good grounds for "pinning" it to the top of the PP subforum, IMO.

I don’t judge the beauty of a woman by taking a magnifying glass and finding some complexion flaws. It’s the overall appearance, character and style.

I think this comparison is invalid. Watches are objects and women are not.

He is talking about perceived beauty generally. A Bentley’s interior would not suddenly be ugly just because of a misaligned dashboard stitch or a rare rattle.

The Bentley is a far better comparison. At the prices PP & Bentley charge, people expect a perfect product. One would be equally disappointed.

This are macro shots of my 2019 aquanaut 5167a. I think the finishing is pretty good.

My 5164 looks like above, not sure why the OP's is so bad. Haven't had a single quality issue with my 5711 or 5164

I would say 99.99% of people who buy Patek are buying the name.
That goes for any watch really. If people strictly bought for value the whole watch market would tumble.
If we bring up depreciation it's kinda sad actually. Not so much durability or life. But value retention yes. I mean should we buying something because we love it and can afford it, because it's going to last, or because it's something we can sell for our money back.
My two cents.

Nearly 100% of automotive grilles are plastic these days. It's down to pedestrian safety legislation.

And here I was thinking it’s cheaper to produce, store and instal.

I am sure a Rolls would not have a plastic grille

Are you?

What does this meta-discussion about first Bentley, and then Rolls-Royce grilles, have to do with forum members' perceived substandard finishing on Patek Philippe's entry models?

The automotive examples you cite are driven by legislation. Substandard finishing isn't.
