Irritated skin on the wrist

I got a rash on my wrist today. It's never happened before. The watch I was wearing is a Datejust 16234. I don't know if the 16234 is 904L or 316L steel.
It's hot today, but no hotter than other days. Where I live, it averages 24 degrees Celsius or 75.2 degrees Fahrenheit. Today we were at 28°C / 82.4 °F

What could be the reason?

Has anyone ever passed it?

I put on a corticosteroid cream

You might have an allergy to a certain metal in the steel.

Unfortunately the only way of fixing this is to go full PM...

Just to be sure it's not the watch, you can send it to me and I will wear it. No reason to put yourself at further risk.

I have not seen that reaction before.

What you need is a doctor not forum advice regarding wearing a watch.
It could be a dozen reasons, soap, lotion, detergent, climate, dirt, insect bite, and yes possibly the watch, but since this hasn't happened in all the years of ownership, why would that be the first suspect.

How long have you had the watch? Was this your first time wearing it? What were you doing while wearing it? Could something have got under the watch and irritated your skin?

First let it heal.
Then wash and dry your arm AND WATCH thoroughly with MILD soap, and rinse/dry well.
Then give it another try at wearing it. (Not too tightly, now.)
This worked for me with my Sky-Dweller.
Also if you sweat a lot under the watch, that can contribute to irritation.
Not solved? Try coating the watch rear cover with clear nail polish as a further test.
And a Dermatologist is ALWAYS a good idea, too.

It could have been some sort of foreign agent that was trapped under your watch. Maybe pollen or something. It might not have anything at all to do with your watch.

I work in the medical field. Could be a lot of things but generally looks very mild. Is it itchy or painful? If you were sweating a bit under the watch it could be a simple heat rash which makes sense if this is the first time and it was a hot day.

Give the watch a good cleaning with soap and water to remove and grime that might be possibly reacting with your skin. Let your skin heal before wearing the watch again. If the reaction continues to occur it could be an allergy or contact dermatitis.

I’d say soap, dishwasher soap or something under the bracelet. Could even be an insect bite. In my humble pinion it’s nothing to worry about. Let it heal, then wash the watch and ensure it’s incredibly well rinsed. Dry and start again. If it happens again it’s the steel. If not it’s something else.

I'll let it heal and try again.
I have put the watch on my right wrist until my left wrist heals and I know if the skin is irritated too.

Thank you all for your opinions.

This has happened to me with belt buckles before (your reaction is quite mild as mentioned above) nickel in the steel is the usual suspect. Seems that SS with scratches make things worse (is your case back scratched?)

I would put a piece of tape or film on the case back and that should solve it.

Can anyone tell me if the back of the 16234 is a 904L or 316L?

My understanding is 904L has a higher nickel content vs. 316L so that *could* be it. Similar small red spots show on my wrist sometimes when I wear my 214270 (904L), but never when wearing my 16710 (316L) or four digit DJ. My remedy has been to switch to either one of the older 316L models or other exhibition/saphire case back watches until it heals. Sorry but I don’t know the answer to your specific question.

316L, I believe. Either way, leave it alone and it will probably go away.

It's the farfalonous. Spray your wrist with brake cleaner and you will be ok.

I doubt it is the watch. Could be anything. If it does not improve, I would suggest seeing a dermatologist.

Wear the watch on your other wrist (after cleaning) for a few days and see if the skin on your other wrist gets irritated as well.

I have this same issue when I wear stainless steel mixed with the heat. I switched to all precious metal.

I'm cured. I put the watch back on my left wrist. I also loosened the jubilee.

I hope the irritation doesn't come back.

I’m glad you’re ok.

Sounded like it was touch and go for a while there. You must have been worried.

Sorry about your maybe problem like all metals some could cause problems some people cannot wear gold. The main and only difference between 316L over 904L it has slightly more Molybdenum(Mo)approx 2% more, approx 1-2% more Crome(Cr), 1% copper(Cu), and approx 10% more nickel and thats it.And in 95% of cases where customers have complained about rashes they disappear after a thorough cleaning of the bracelet in good old soap and water. It's not that important how much nickel is inside of the alloy, all what counts is what amount of nickel thats released from the alloy under the influence of sweat for example. And the way the alloy is made a Rolex releases very very little nickel content on many tests over the years since 904L was introduced, less than many that use 316L SS.If its gets really bad you could wear the watch on a strap or even use tape on inside bracelet and case back. But myself believe perhaps you should seek help from a dermatologist, to see if you do have a real allergy problem if rash continues after washing watch etc.

Good information. I didn't know it released so little nickel.
Thanks

Haha.

I’m only kidding with you.

I suspect that if you’ve been wearing your DJ for as long as you have, without incident, this is something that will just pass.

Don’t sweat it. Excuse the pun.
