Funny/Sad story

So, my AD in the Seattle area had a special event today where they invited folks to come see new watches from several lines and buy a hard to get Rolex. They had a Pepsi, Batman, root beer, a few Daytona's and several other hard to get models. Doors opened at 10AM and 40 or so people filtered in. Names were written on cards and they did an anonymous drawing at 10:30AM. First name drawn, was a woman who was there with her husband. This meant she had first choice to buy any one of the watches but she could only buy one. She approached the counter and told the sales guy that her husband was outside on a call. They gave her a few minutes to go get him, well apparently his call was more important and they moved on and a string of around 5 other people snatched up all of the tough to get models. Sucked because another group of 6 guys came in and each got to fill out a card, clearly they organized a group and as a result they got to purchase a Daytona and Batman for MSRP. I expect those will be on Craigslist by this afternoon. By the time the guy on the phone outside came back in there wasn't much left and he was whining in his beer. I left without buying anything as none of the models left were of interest.

pretty interesting that they just had a lot of the hard to get models available. the random drawing is actually quite fair.

Clever approach from the AD - Obviously these watches were accrued and saved for a gathering of the sheep for the sheering lol

I imagine they were hoping to sell off a few of the less desirable's after the dust settled

It was not Ben Bridge, and the random drawing was fair in a way but the 6 guys that all rolled in together kind of swayed it towards their favor a bit. They ended up getting 2 of the 10 or so hot models. They also had reps their from Breitling, JLC and a few others with most of the brands showing their new stock. Most were there for a Rolex though.

I think it’s kind of cool although I would never buy something I didn’t want just because I could.

Thanks for sharing but such a scene to buy a watch would be not for me.

That’s pretty cool, to be honest.

Sucks for that lady and the guy, but hey priorities

That’ll teach them something

Not perfect but certainly a fairer way of doing it.

As I stood in line waiting to get in I thought, is this really a good use of my time? Sad that it has come to this. I think the AD is trying to be fair and I commend them for this.

The experience must be exciting as I would imagine. Agonizing for most but thrilling for the victorious.
At least Seattle has excellent beers...

It's just all about health, happiness & family. The rest are just necessary inconvenience we have to deal with.

Drawing lots for salivating flippers with fake smiles, the guy on the phone was probably the only genuine buyer in there.

Yes, Alvin Goldfarb. Great AD and most of the folks there are great to work with.

I was one of the people that won but passed. They asked me if i wanted to enter my name when I came in just to look around - I had no idea what the drawing was for. Eventually i was given the opportunity to buy at retail either a black sub, date or no-date, or a james cameron, neither of which I own - I don't own any modern sports rolex actually.

I feel very lucky in life but never 'win' stuff like this so it came as a surprise decision with significant time pressure as there were people waiting for the next name to be called. At least I got to actually see what these look like in person! Really liked the black sub! Very cool.

I love watches and my family recently told me they got me a watch for an upcoming birthday so I didn't want to spoil that watch with some super rare steel sports rolex. Plus my business is in expansion phase so I may need the capital.

Maybe I could've purchased it as a investment/milestone for my 4yo son. I'm not the flipping sort so I would not have benefited in that regard. Kind of regret not seizing the moment. Oh well! At least I have a forum to write about it to get it off my mind.

I'm surprised the guy that picked the Daytona didn't turn around to the remaining customers and say "Right, who wants to buy a Daytona?"

An AD in the Bay Area did this. Sent out invites and closed down their store in the mall for a private event where they raffled off chances to buy SS models.

I didn't stay as there were too many people and no watches I wanted. I did go so the AD would see me there just in case that keeps me on the list to continue to get these invites. Nothing I really want but you never know what Rolex will release next.
