One Less Comet On The Road

My younger son always wanted a "classic" car. As he was growing up, I had several muscle cars and a couple of street rods. About 6 months ago he found a 1962 Mercury Comet that he fell for... I personally didn't care for the style, but he liked it because it was something that not everybody had.

Fast forward to about 6 days ago, a woman in a 2006 Toyota 4Runner from out of state who was apparently lost, pulled right out in front of him and stopped. The Mercury being a 1962, had manual brakes, manual steering, no airbags, crumple zones, collapsible steering column and only lap belts. Brad broadsided her... a full T-Bone. The woman had no insurance, no license and the 4Runner wasn't registered.

My son suffered a fractured sternum, several broken ribs, a minor skull fracture and concussion. He was unconscious at the scene, transported to the hospital and released after 3 days. The woman had a neck strain.

Wow - that’s terrible.

Hope he will make a full recovery from all that damage.

Will they prosecute the at fault driver ?

She was released on her own recognizance, and has since disappeared. The police said that she probably fled the state and there is nothing they can do.

this is the reason I don't own a resto mod. I got T-boned by an F250 going 45-50 last year on my driver side. Thankfully I was in a 20 year old Volvo, I walked away from the accident with a few minor scrapes. I still remember them showing us all the old car crashes in drivers ed, and what wouldn't merit going to the hospital on a modern car, caused fatalities in alot of the older solid frame vehicles.

hopefully a speedy recovery for him! The muscle soreness afterwards made it incredibly hard to move, I imagine he's probably feeling the same way.

Hope he mends quickly and just a shame about the car. Given how old the car is with a lack of safety features, I suppose it could have been worse, is one way to look at it. But that is really a tragic experience and I hope it all turns out well for him!

Thanks everyone. He is on the mend, but as 330ci stated its the muscle soreness ... that and the broken ribs that are getting him now. Well, he's pretty upset about his car as well. he had "plans" for it.

It could have ended up being a fatality very easily. He is still young and will bounce back a lot faster than I would, for sure. He is tired of me saying it, but all it takes is one split second, one distraction, one misjudgment and it's all over.

Speedy and full recovery to your boy. It could have been worse.
There’s a lot to be said for the safety of modern cars. Antilock brakes, airbags, cameras....
We’ve come a long way with safety.

Hope he recovers and finds himself another Comet.

I had a '64 Caliente, and a '66 Cyclone, both of them uprades to the basic Comet. Great memories.

Here's wishing your son a quick recovery! Gives me something to think about - have a few vintage rides I like to tool around in, especially on the weekends.

As Sarge says, one has the feeling that the 'no hoper' will eventually get what she deserves. Hopefully no long-term negatives from the concussion and youth is on his side for the rest. Pity about the Comet.
