Trading 2 Pateks (5296G & 5035J) to upgrade for WHAT?? help me decide
I have two Pateks, a 5296G purchased new in 2018 and a 5035J from 2001 that has a recent HSWA service in 2018. I like both of these watches, but I don't love them. I bought the 5296G new from an AD for $23k and looking at used prices, the high end is about $20k so I would take a $3k loss which is fine. I can likely sell the 5035J for $19k. All told, $20k for the 5296G and $19k for the 5035J will net me $39k to apply towards a new or used higher end Patek. Ideally, I would prefer to just trade both rather than go through the hassle of selling each. For a trade to a dealer I would probably get mabye $34k total toward a new Patek.
My dilemma is, in the $35k price range on the used market, what should I get? What is the most Patek I can get for $35k? If you were to spend $35k on a used Patek today, what would you get? |

3940 might be a stretch for 35k.
You're in the 5396, 5205, 5230 territory I think. If you want to add money, then definetely a 3940!

Have you considered anything else but another Patek?
Lange & Sohne, FP Journe, Laurent Ferrier, Grönefeld, Urban Jurgensen? |

Add and get a 3940 or 5170j, or straight trade for a 5110. Other brands, you might consider a moser endeavor Perpetual

There are so many great options. I really like Grossmann, Journe and Lange. New Patek doesn't offer you much in your price range as an upgrade.

Preowned Lange 1815 Chrono is right on the money. New with a discount not too much above. Thinner and wears better (IMO) than the 5205.

The 5205R is incredible and what I think I want. Regrettably I'm struggling to find a dealer online who will take my 5296G and 5035J in a trade who has a used 5205R in stock. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Have you had any offers from dealers yet, from experience dealers margins can be quite high and nothing like Chrono24 prices.

If you can't I would just sell both of yours to a trusted seller here and buy the 5205 from another trusted, also many of the trusteds talk with each other.

That's a great idea thanks. Is there a list of who the trusted Patek sellers are? I looked in the "who's who" forum but there are 10,000+ posts and it's difficult to sort.

Best is to type a few Patek models into the search on that forum and then scroll through to see which sellers constantly have good reviews. Names like davidsw and takuya should come up often.

If you really want to part with those two for one, I'd probably look at a 3950 or a Lange 1815 Chronograph.
