Let's be honest here... it's mostly about the chase

How many of us can agree that it's not so much about buying a new watch, but the chase? Search and researching which model to get, what colors, finding out the going prices, locating one, negotiating, and of course, the anticipation.

Often this excitement is followed by the actual receipt of the watch, which can be fun, but then complacency sets in, something even more shiny catches our eye and sometimes even, a smidgen of disappointment when it's just not exactly what we thought it was. And the regret. Oy, the regret!

So it gets sold, traded, given away, and the search begins again, the chase starts up and the adrenaline courses through our veins once more.

And it's not always a watch, it can be a car, a vacation home, a beanie baby, a fancy fountain pen, whatever it is that you might collect or covet.

Thoughts?

Thrill of the chase, baby!

I tend to agree but I'm also lucky in that I can find things that I actually want to keep for the long haul. That isn't to say I haven't sold a few watches or 4 here and there, but those that are in my stable now are things that I am very happy with / intend to keep.

I know the chase is popular to some.

To me, it doesn't interest me at all.

When I decided I want something, I want it now. I want to enjoy "the thing" not running around looking for it.

Although if everyone had my opinion, there wouldn't be any nightclubs.

Agreed. It used to be about the chase when things were available.

Now it is just too much work for too little payoff.

If I cannot get it, as is the case more and more, I move onto other things. I have bought a new iPad Pro and a new telescope recently since there are no watches I want available to me.

not for me.

I can only speak for myself, and for me, being in the present kills the chase bug every time.

When i feel the allure of the chase creep in, i go try on a few watches just to admire and feel grateful for the one that is already on my wrist.

I agree with the thrill of the chase but, once I get something I like, I am generally very content with that purchase until it wears out or becomes financially untenable to keep going.

Whether it be cars, mountain bikes, cameras, watches, or pens, I generally have kept everything that I have fallen in love with unless it was for something that I viewed as a stepping stone to an ultimate grail purchase.

Agreed. Had a BLNR, Hulk, SS sub, and a 116613lb over the years. Sold them for a little less than retail. Now due to the hype and price im kicking myself. If I had sold them now I would have made 30-40k vs loosing 5-10k

For some, perhaps, yet not me.

New possibilities.....

It's about seeing it in person. The elegance, sheer perfections and beauty. The having it in my hands, caressing it, slowly feeling every curve and point, and the reaction to my wanting touch....

Sorry, what were we talking about again?

Sometimes it is, sometimes it is just the instant gratification of something you see and want (and available) lol

I would say it’s a bit of both. I do enjoy the chase but I only go after what I want and not for the sake of the chase. I tend to want things I am after right away as well-except with watches. Since I have several and love them all I have no problem embracing the chase. It kind of extends the enjoyment of the piece for me once it’s finally acquired.

It’s nice to chase, but you also need to see it pay off

Well, I did go though a ton of road bikes before I got my custom titanium Eriksen gravel bike.

To me, it is about the watch. I would have preferred to be able to walk into any AD and make the purchase.

I disagree. I only chase when I actually want something. I have no qualm about the chase taking 5 minutes. Truly am not a good shopper.

I really dislike chasing anything. However, I do enjoy researching and finding out what I like best, but prefer to walk into an AD and purchase at MSRP. Haven’t purchased a Rolex since ~2017 and still enjoy each piece in my collection and have never sold any pieces.

Not for me, I am a long term owner. My nice watches are bought to celebrate or remember something. For me it’s all about sentimental connection.

I love looking down at a watch and remembering where it has been with me.

I have more of a weakness for mountainbikes than I do watches, I have had 20+ since I started the hobby in ‘96. My latest is a limited edition Scott Spark Supersonic from last year, 21.6 lb large frame full suspension with the best of everything on it. But that hasn’t stopped me from lusting for the all new Spark that was announced right before the Olympics. And right now, similar to Rolex, they are mostly unobtainable, at least in the US. A few lower end versions have trickled in but so far no high end ones have gone out to consumers, but because I “chase” I am “on the list” at two dealers for one.

I can't say that I chase watches, but I've done pretty well going with what pops up.
