Are we witnessing a silent resurgence of the dress watch?

I don’t mind setting either my 5726 or 5205G, it is part of the ritual.
Takes 2 min tops.
Wind, set 6am, date to 1, set month, set date, set day, set moon, set time....done.

good point, i was not sure whether to take the 5270J or the 5320G. i opted for the 5320G for the convenience of the automatic movement.

but i still need to add a PCC to the collection at some point in time and it won't be a daily wearer

With technology on the rise (just look at apple watch) and young people dont caring about traditional stuff, dress watches have pretty slim chances of being in long term focus, only few models which could be perceived as status symbol, similar to current sport models...

i do agree. very recently i added a 5270P and wore it twice. it is sitting comfortably in the safe. my plan is to wear it for a week or two in a row, when i get to it. the 5320 is supercomy though. on the winder and off you go.

For about the last 4 months or so I had been wearing my Nautilus 5726 1a; but this thread got me missing my 5205G so I have now rotated to that...gawd....what a beautiful watch. My all time favorite. I know most here will disagree but I think it is the most beautiful Patek wristwatch bar none. I have a blue leather strap that matches the dial perfectly too...pure unadulterated class.

Yeah, not so sure. The lack of Patek dress models in my local market is not due to the rise in popularity, but rather due to bundling. The ADs are telling me now I have to buy women’s watch for hot piece allocation because they ran out of men’s dress watch to sell.

just a q, could it be that chrono24 reduced the frequency of the that mouth watering Nautilus-RoyalOak landing page background image in favor of some dress watch images?

in the past i only saw the Nautilus-RoyalOak on first load.. now suddenly i see some Nomos too.

this kind of change might have an influence as well

Regarding the 5205G: I had a chance to this one on a couple of weeks ago, and it’s stunning. I was especially taken with that case design and the lugs. Every part of that watch is a marvel. Enjoy it!

I’m 45 and recently picked up a classic Art Deco style Gondolo I have bigger sports watch’s but love the classic slim 1920’s style of this one, I also recently swapped my 39mm Explorer for a 36mm so my tastes are definitely sliming down to what they were 20 years ago!!

OP that was a great reflection on the market and some interesting comparisons. Being in my early 50s, like many my age, we’ve seen fashion trends jump all over the place and sometimes come full circle. Will dress watches re-emerge as the desired timepieces? Probably.

Honestly I love rare handcrafts and dome clocks. Would I like a 5164 as a daily beater yes but I’ll take pp grand comps all day over sport watches I just can’t afford them. 5270p and 5370p are my absolute grails plus the falcon head one. How about that for a 3 watch collection?

As another father of young kids I think they are very valid considerations - mine are 1 and 3 and bath time, nappy changes, etc do make you think about what you reach for from the watch box. Also I do think it depends on how and if you are dressing for work, etc.

That said, this weekend I put on a dress shirt just to be able to wear my VC ultra-fine 1955 and today I put on my 5196r to wear around the house (5196 is actually a very versatile piece in my view and does just as well with jeans and a t-shirt as it does with a suit).

The watch I have found that suits my lifestyle overall though is the VC Overseas on a rubber strap. It is my do anything watch and it feels at home. An aquanaut would cover the same ground if I could have gotten one.

In summary I would say that I am finding a lot more time for dress watches in my life, but it is a conscious effort and has some restrictions. I think the really watch of the moment is one that straddles that boundary of robust, sporting and refined. Of the major names, I think the royal oak is the one in most danger as it is the least practical as a daily wear, despite being a “sports watch”.
