Sub or the new OP in Black
Hi all...I have a new Sub on deposit, it is still in its coffin in the AD's safe, the AD agreed to let me do that until we heard from Basel if the SUB was going to updated or not, if it had been I would have waited for a new updated Sub, but atlas the Sub remained unchanged! Meanwhile, I always liked the OP 39 with the Crown on the top but never liked the colours and pips that were available, until yesterday! I really like the new OP in Black, I think it's Rolex's most understated best release this year.
So opinions please, buy a new Sub as my first Rolex watch or go for the OP in Black? |

The sub is a fantastic first, every day, and last Rolex you’ll ever need. You can’t go wrong with that imo. That said, I love the new OP as well. A little less sporty and certainly understated. I guess it depends most on how you dress and what you’re looking for in the watch. Not a bad choice either way.
If it was me, I’d smile now with the sub. Before long you’ll be plotting #2 and the OPs have traditionally been easier to find after the first few months of production. |

This. The Op 39's are great, but you'll be able to pick that up for a hefty discount pretty soon after they hit the market, especially GM.
(I've come within inches of getting the grape one. That dial is just so puuuurple, and it keeps dropping under $4500 at the usual places.) |

I'd go with SUB. It's not even close. The new OP is very nice, but seriously, it's not in the same category.

Are you buying a watch simply because you want a Rolex or to address the needs that you have for buying it? Do you anticipate that your purchase is best served by it being capable of being worn in both business and casual circumstances? When do you anticipate that you can afford to buy your next Rolex? If it is at some later time, consider what the best all-around watch will be for your needs at the moment.
If you want an all-arounder also consider whether your work environment is always business casual or is formal at times. Interaction levels with clients, customers, suppliers, and price points of what you deal with. What best gives you credibility. Look at what your boss/supervisor and colleagues wear, and consider whether the watch has to be a bit more stealth than showy. What do the upper people in your organization wear and do they appreciate watches? |
