Yachtmaster likeability?

I was set to buy my girlfriend her first Rolex..with the assumption based on what I've seen her wear, that she'd prefer an OP model.

Instead, she favors the dark rhodium, platimum bezel Yachtmaster.
It is about double the cost of an OP.

While I can afford the price, I'm loathe to pay $10k+ for a watch that is lower on my list of Rolex favorites. I think it is a beautiful watch, but I favor the Submariner, Explorer and GMT models, especially at that price point.

Any advice on longer term yachtmaster likeability and value? I recognize all that is secondary to what she likes ...but still I want to hear the opinions of TRF!

Would she go for the 37mm model? If so look at your argument again. If not, then see it as a shared watch you can both wear

Who cares what you like? If it's for her get her the watch she wants.

I bought my wife a 31mm DateJust with diamond bezel. I sure can't wear it and it cost $20k. What I wanted didn't even figure into it.

FTR-I like the Yachtmaster with the platinum bezel, your GF has excellent taste.

My opinion (as you asked) is that she could do better.

(Than you, that is. Not the watch)

It sounds like you might be jones'n to buy another Rolex.

Women usually aren't interested in Rolexs. They seem more into diamonds or expensive jewelry. Would she rather have a $10K set of ear rings, or a watch?

But the YM isn't a very popular model compared other sports models. I am very fond of it, but I never owned one. I am not a fan of the new hand colors.

If the watch is a gift for her then it shouldn't matter how you feel about it. I personally think the rhodium dial YM is a stunning reference but I'm sure it isn't everyones cup of tea.

I love the reference you're talking about, best in the ym lineup imo. It's nice to see something a little different and those blue accents are fantastic.

It's her watch, not yours. What you like doesn't matter.

That said, I had a YM a while back, tired of it quickly and got rid of it. Resale on YM sucks, so keep that in mind.

YM and Daytona are usually more popular with ladies than the ceramics so I would go full ahead and ignore yourself.

I added the blue dialed model to my collection just last week so I have a positive prejudice where this reference is concerned. That being said the platinum bezel with the rhodium, blue or platinum dial is just stunning. It just dazzles in most any type of light.
For me it is kind of a different Sub. I have a DBlue and the Sub was too close to that for me. The YM 40 was just different enough. As far as value is concerned I think this reference is a sleeper. You don't see many of them and I think down the road it's value will go up.
Don't discount the fact your lady wants one! There is an old adage (even if your not married) "Happy wife,Happy life!". You can also get them bnib for $1000-$1500 less than msrp which in today's market is not bad.

I've been enjoying my YM for 3 years now. I love it and it still feels special every time I wear it, such a treat. I like the fact it's discontinued (platinum dial). I'm aware I'm in a minority though as most favour the Sub which I'm not a fan of due to the super case. The YM is one step closer to jewelry and less of a rugged toolwatch. Likeability is obviously very personal and it's 100% for me.

Value retention however is another story. MSRP when I bought it was EUR 11,350. Three years later it's lost 29%.

You should buy her what she wants and not what’s popular or the best investment. The trend is to buy Rolex as investments - its getting boring! Live a little! ;-)

In your shoes I would buy a 40 mm YM rhodium and maybe, just maybe, she will let you borrow it ;-)

I got a dark rhodium YM last month and love it! I assume you’ve seen it in person. It’s far more beautiful face to face than in pictures. I have a 40mm BLNR which I also love, but opted for the 37mm YM for comfort and the ease of keeping under my shirt cuffs. I have small wrists and the BLNR is a beast on me.

As many will tell you here, get what you love! Or in this case, what she loves. The rhodium (either DJ or OP) is also a stunning and beautiful watch, and, as you say, half the price.

I have the rhodium YM, love it!

But I'd be glad she choose a YM instead of a DJ every other lady has...

I’m sure you want her to be happy, especially as it’s a gift...she obviously knows what she wants. Enough said. I’m a gal who loves Daytonas not YMs, but who cares. It’s about her.

If you're buying it for her, what difference does it make?

It's HER watch. Get what SHE wants. Not you.
