There’s a thread on Omega Forums of several pilots wearing their commissioned pieces in flight. https://omegaforums.net/threads/wth-...4/post-2397764

I know pilots are often into watches, but have no idea how often their timepieces accompany them in the clouds.

Omega Speedmaster. The 'Bertie Bassett'.

Yet another version of the Speedmaster.
Good, or just another marketing exercise?
Just, how many versions are there now?

It’s an interesting looking reference but it’s not for me either.

I prefer the classic versions.

I only recently acquired my first speedy pro (Dec 31!) and it was a somewhat non-traditional one (white dial). I respect the Speedy but the black dial versions just didn’t sing to me enough to pull the trigger. I will say that over the years the number of variants diluted my interest a bit too… makes it hard for the non-hardcore Speedy buyer to decide. The flip side is one did catch my interest and enough for me to pull the trigger (and enough for my wife to essentially insist I do so…)

But all these variants inevitably dilute the name imho. This one is cool but some of the touches take it out of my interest zone.

Very nice and I agree with you … there are so many references it’s a bit overwhelming.

I was in the same boat as you when it came to the Speedmaster. I finally settled on this one for the historical significance and sheer beauty

Beautiful watch and great choice.

I was considering a hesalite speedy pro but I fall into the Daytona camp for black dials (and love my 116500). It would have been the “second choice” given my personal aesthetic… whereas the white dial is to my eyes a prettier watch than the white Daytona.

An example of the diverse taste the Omega marketing people are no doubt playing to… but it really does have a diluting impact and an area where Rolex knows best. Rolex is far more deliberate in how they propagate models and variants…

I did consider the Omega sub forum, but thought that, people other than just, 'Omega folks' might be interested in the general theme.

Great choice!

I've had the black sapphire sandwhich for several years, but the white dial is a better looking watch IMO. Plus, it's ten times more legible for those of us that use readers.

It's a name to entice. Pilots wear and use a variety of watches; this one is wishful thinking by Omega.

Get one if you like it but don't expect to see many pilots to toss their favorites for it.

Have seen these with USN wings on the back including call sign. Asked about how to obtain this at local Omega store, SA looked at me like I had two heads. Anybody know where or how to obtain one with prestigious Naval pilot wings?

Spent about a half-hour with the new Pilot at the Omega Boutique on 5th Avenue in Manhattan .....

Too thick for me and in general wears quite large. (My wrist is 6.75 inches). Also, wasn’t crazy about the lug design, although they’re nicely brushed.

Another thing that surprised me is how textured the dial is. On the Omega website, the dial is portrayed as jet black. It is not. It’s more dark gray in person, in part because of the texture.

In general, a cool watch, but I didn’t love it, especially for $10k-ish. Not sure why Omega linked it to the Speedmaster line. They should have called it a re-release of the Flightmaster.

Being an Omega lover and a pilot, I was thrilled with the introduction of the Speedy Pilot!

I love the nod to the FlightMaster but having it remain a Speedmaster and do not feel it is intended to be a reissue of the FM. I think Omega simply wanted to expand their SM line (why is everyone so upset with the multiple options of Speedmaster that are available??? It's great!!) while honoring a model from their past. Although I fully intend on buying a vintage FM one day, I doubt that the case size and style will allow it to spend as much time on my wrist as the classic SM designs, and I bet a new, similarly designed version would not be a popular seller.

I was nervous that the Pilot was going to be too thick and I wouldn't like it when I saw it in person, but once I strapped it onto my 7" wrist, the thickness disappeared and by knees buckled... I had to have it! I wasn't thrilled to pay $9500 for it at the time, but that is now forgotten and I absolutely love, LOVE wearing this watch at work!

Although I still feel that this watch will appeal mostly to folks in my profession, I have chatted with ADs that say they have lists of customers waiting for the watch and they are sold as soon as they hit the shops.
