What is a Rolex to the layman?

To heck if I can figure out how to make a poll, but...

What is the most easily identifiable as a Rolex Rolex to someone who has little to no knowledge of Rolex and the various models?

Prior to joining this forum I knew very little about Rolex. Basically all I knew was that I wanted one. Now by the way when I go to any AD (thanks to you all) I match the employees almost always in knowledge. Sometimes I seem to be even educating them.

Back to my question. What model do you think says "that's a Rolex" to someone who knows very little to nothing about them?

For me it was the Submariner although at the time I did not know that was the model name. I saw a TT one on my buddy/co-worker's wrist and quickly even without close inspection knew it was a Rolex.

For me it is the Day-Date 18KT Gold because that is the first one I ever saw and the GMT Master because that is the first one my husband bought - it was a lot of money to pay for a watch, but I knew he really wanted it so I didn't mind. Now of, course I am also hooked on Rolexes and thinking about buying another.

Anyone of the Rolex's which have the cyclop eye usually tip a person off that you may be wearing a Rolex.

For non-in the know types, I woudl bet 90% would see a submariner, seadweller, or gmt with black bezel and know they are Rolex.

For 20% in general and 50% of the over 45 crowd, the datejust on the jubilee band would be similar.

Just my guesses...

I think any model of a watch that has a cyclops is always assumed to be a Rolex, whether it be a DateJust or a Submariner or a GMT I/II.

Like someone mention that the cyclops is the only indication from a distance would assume its a Rolex. The Layman probably wouldn't know a Rolex at all.

Well, I think people first look at you before they do so at your wrist.

If you stand out with a magnetic personality of your own, the rest will follow suit and so will the eyes of the beholder!!

My best guess is the Submariner, then the Day/Date. I think to the layman, Rolex means quality and luxury most often, but obviously, many will have a different feeling depending on how affordable it is to them.

As a kid my Uncle had a DJ.
I didn't know what is was back then but when I was old enough to know that's what it was.
Oh, and he was quite the ladies man so I was told.

DJ and DD either TT or SS.

My dad has always worn a all gold DD with a black face from the 70s. And my mom has 2 TT DJ with diamond markers. Ive never seen to many SUBs, YM, or Datyonas. My 3 older brothers all have SS DJ with silver, dark grey, and white dials.
