Sky Dweller Steel vs DateJust II steel

Just picked up a skydweller and thought some of you might find this an interesting comparison.

Very good comparison photo. They certainly look alike. Although there is a significant difference when on the wrist. Currently a very questionable $13,000.00 difference in the marketplace. This photo makes that a hard sell.

I’m sure there’s a joke there somewhere... but just to stupid to get it right now.

Also congratulations to the OP and thanks for the cool comparison, any chance you can do a side-view to show how the thickness compares? Thanks

I'm missing the humor in that comment, fwiw. My SkyD measures exactly 42mm. The look alike actually was 0.8mm smaller that the SkyD according to my measurements. My comparison photo shows a slightly different comparison. The biggest difference is in the thickness!!!

Congratulations on the new Sky D!!!!

As far as the similarities, there is also a similarity between the DJII and the DJ41. No one seems to care about that. So many nay sayers regarding the Rolex Annual Calendar it just amazes me.

Wow, didn't realize how much lager the SkyD is compared to the DJII until seeing that wrist shot!

I knew it was the same blue dial colour as the date just , nothing wrong with that , but its all about that magnificent complication.

Hi, I updated the pics to be more accurate.

I was quite distracted this morning when I bought the watch and wasn’t that excited about it, however had an hour or two with it now and actually think it’s great!

Actually on the wrist it is not comparable to the DJII, it’s like comparing a Mercedes S Class to an E Class. Similar looks at first glance (just a bit bigger) but in practice it’s totally different.

Great watch id highly recommend it. And I think an absolute bargain for a brand new Rolex AC for £10,600! The AC is brilliant too, setting so quick and easy.

I think he is, for some 13k for an annual calendar and GMT function is not a good value proposition when the rest of the watch is so similar. For some it absolutely is worth it. We are all different and that is ok.

How does it compare in cost to other GMT/Annuals? Let's face it; it's a real bargain. The Blancpain lists for almost $24K. I guess it would be more popular if it didn't carry Rolex DNA. The biggest complaint being that it looks like Rolex's most popular line. What a sad statement for a Rolex forum. Or maybe it's just that so many aren't willing to pay for Rolex other than a date and time (and perhaps a day indicator).

Also he may be suggesting that the SD is a larger watch in comparison to the already large DJ ll.

Thank you for the pics - I never realised there was such a big difference in size - now I really want a SkyD.

You could be right, my point was we all have different perceptions on value and we all have our own preferences and taste. I think the complication is worth the extra money, its the aesthetics that I don't care for. To each their own.

MSRP to MSRP with a $5,500.00 spread is great value for the SS Sky Dweller. I was referring to the grey market premium on the SKD vs discounted NIB DJII.

Sky Dweller Steel vs DateJust II steel

Thanks for the shots. Didn't realize the SkyD is that much bigger than a DJ2. The DJ2 is probably the largest watch I could wear comfortably

The SS sky D is a fantastic watch. Yes, it looks similar to the DJ, but that's about it. The dial is very different in terms of its detailing, it is thicker and has loads more presence.

That and the complications. I think it's great value at mrp. Pity it's hard to get at that, but I live in hope.

Strangely 0.8mm difference from the DJII doesn't feel much different on the wrist. The SkyD is very comfortable. I find it much more comfortable on the wrist than the SubC 114060 for example (which is 2mm smaller). I'd try one on before discounting it.

Actually the blame for the reduced price is the DJ41 which is both under 40mm and using the newer 72hr reserve movement. Call this enamorment by fans with a return to traditional proportions and a new wiz-bang movement. I have little interest in either of these by themselves or combined. I personally loved the DJII look and performance.

I definitely would try on a SkyD...that is if my AD ever gets one

Great post! The DJ is a stunner and your photos capture it very well. And I’m now even more keen to get one of the blue Skydwellers!

My AD got one and gave me the heads up... but also gave me the heads up that it was going to a VIP customer and not me

Congratulations,
Sky Dweller looks lik a DJ variant to an untrained eye but it also houses the most complex movement made by Rolex. I don't care about annual calendar but it's good to have it.
Sky Dweller is less expensive than other watches in its category as well but it's harder to pick up off the shelf for stainless steel models whereas I have seen many gold variants of the watch that awaits the buyer. I said that Sky Dweller is less expensive others here's an example
For example : H Moser. It's outrageously pricey for a watch almost as minimalistic designed as Nomos but somehow I like H Moser. Nomos does not offer annual calendar in case you may ask why Nomos
What's H Moser and Nomos doing in Sky Dweller and DJ thread? It's due to the fact that I want to bring on the table something that many people highly talk about :Similarities.
Sky Dweller is supposed to look like DJ or Day Date not Daytona or GMT Master II. It would be designed something out of Rolex line like YM II but this wou have been too risky, Rolex made a profitable decision

I tried a gold one to see how the size would be on my wrist and its a nice hefty watch, being gold it was also heavier than a steel version too.

However i am looking for a daily wear plain watch and not too thrilled with skydwellers busy dial. Also servicing that movement will be more compared to a simpler movement.

Tried a dj41 and that one was a bit small,i do like the new thinner stick markers more than the thicker dj ii markers.

Pricewise the skydweller will be almost $10k more than a dj ii so for my use of daaily wearing dj ii will fit the bill.

Both nice watches in their own league. I wouldnt compare them head to head though

Congrats on your new purchase OP
