Excellent work guys.

This is just the info I've been trying to track down
as I want to research for a purchase of a 79160 silver dial
or a 79170 silver dial.

So much info in one thread, WOW.

All the best

Matthew, it is a 79280 which while being excellent Tudor watches are different from the 79180.

The 79280 has a thinner case and a sapphire crystal, where as the 79180 has a thicker case and an acrylic crystal. Both have valjoux movements (cal 7750) which have a great reputation.

I think for vintage collectors they do prefer the 79180, but the 79280 is still a great watch.

It'd better to ask the seller to confirm the followings :

1. If it comes with rolex crown and rolex case back
2. If the serial no. is B95xxxx or earlier
3. If the dial marked with T SWISS MADE T
4. If it comes with 78400 tudor bracelet and 605 end pc

If all answers of the questions are "yes", it should be correct and it belongs to the earlier version of 79280.

Hi
I am looking for a Tudor chrono with black tachy bezel, silver dial and black register dials.
Its a 79260 or 79160?
If any one want to sell it i could be interested.
Best Regards

Tudor Chronograph (9430?)

I have a Tudor chronograph (similar in general appearance to the watch posted by matthew r), "big block", matte black face with a white frame around the date, Rolex crown, case and bracelet, the wording on the face reads: Tudor, Automatic Chrono time, T Swiss T, below the Tudor there is no "Oysterdate" this particular detail and the amount of Rolex marked parts lead me to believe it is a 9430 which would make it one of the first automatic chronographs Tudor produced and date it to the mid 1970's. It has been serviced by Rolex and is authentic. I am curious if anyone has an idea about the value of this watch compared to the later and much more common "Oysterdate" and "Princedate" models. thanks in advance!

Big Block & a Daytona

Here are my two chrono-cousins. Both are great watches and seem to attract lots of attention on the wrist.

Finally got one of my own!
Serial B455xxx, can anyone a shed light on the manufacturing date (I know it's very hard to find that info)?
Just handed it in to RSC here in Shanghai.

Congrat, kent, you have eventually got the 79170...

According to my database, B4xx,xxx serial corresponds to around 1992....

The last "Big Block" series [79160 w/ fixed black tacky bezel, 79170 w/ rotating bezel, and 79180 w/ fixed metal tacky bezel] were produced until about the early to mid 1990's. They featured Rolex cases, crowns, bracelets and Tudor clasps. The next series, the 79280 did not have the Rolex labeled case or crown. The case was changed as well to look more like a modern Daytona. Not sure exactly when the Tiger versions were produced but they did not sport the Rolex crown anywhere on the watch. The 79280P series had polished lugs, hence the "P". Hope that helps.
The "Big Blocks" are considered more desirable than the Tiger models. The Monte Carlo dialed versions even older that the 79170 series are even more desirable and the prices are going thru the roof.
A few gratuitous picks of my 79170.

Dan, what a beautiful watch! You've taken good care of it.

I don't know much about Tudor watches, but I instantly fell in love with yours, just from the photos. I mean it's a chronograph with a Rolex case and crown... AND it has the date!

Dan (or anyone else on this forum), I'd really appreciate it if you'd take some time to answer a few questions for me:

1. Exactly what year is your 79170?
2. What kind of movement does it have?
3. Is the crystal plastic? If yes, can it be replaced with a sapphire one?
4. What is the function of a rotating bezel with 12-hour digits on it (different time zone maybe)? Why not minutes like the Sub? And is there a version of your watch with a tachymeter (or other) bezel?
5. Does it have the same underwater rating as the Sub?
6. I really want one with a black face! Where do you think I can find one and how much would it go for?

Thanks in advance everyone!

Thanks for the kind words, Youssef.
1. Early 1990's.
2. Valjoux 7750 [great movement].
3. Plastic [easy to polish, great luster]
4. The bezel can be used as a second 12 hour timezone, simple timer, ect.
5. It has the trip lock crown but not sure.
6. Good question. I've seen them advertised from $4K to $7K.
Good luck. Well worth it if you can find one.

I surely wear either of mine more often than my 116520. I guess that makes it more practical to me.

I would like to know production numbers on these compared to the SS Daytona.

Sorry to bump this one but I also missed this thread and have been looking for one of these watches. You have all been a tremendous help in learning more about the Tudor.

Now if I could only find one? I did not see any posts on where there may be a few for sale.

Again, great stuff.

thx

That's the problem. According to my watchmaker these chronos were not made in huge numbers. You'll have to peruse as many watch sites as possible and be very diligent in your search.
Good luck,

Great looking watch Kent Kurt.

What about the new Iconaut, at 43mm it rivals the Deep-Sea and it has a date, a 24 hour hand and a chronograph, all in one, and it's around $4,000 or less with a very similar looking bracelet to an Oyster Bracelet.

The 79170 is pretty nice, no doubt about that.

The Rolex AD in Guam sells new Tudor watches. First time I've ever been able to examine any new Tudors in person. Although very nice the vintage models have the advantage of many Rolex attributes [crown, case, bracelet] and will hold their value well.

from what I gather the ones with polished lugs are the later ones, tiger or not. I always thought that the polished lugs meant they came on straps rather than bracelets but if that bracelet is what it came with, I am wrong. These are a bit confusing but I love them!

It's a signed bracelet, but may be a replacement for the strap?

Had the same Tudor Chronograph, however it had the Tachymeter bezel and silver sub dials. I bought it for about $1400-$1500 and later sold it to buy a Breitling. I wish I still had that watch and I saw one just like it on Ebay some time back for min bid of $6200. I dont know the market value for that watch, however I would like to Buy one.

That's a 79280P [p, for polished lugs]. Not sure of the production dates or value, sorry. It came with either the bracelet shown or strap. Nice looker too.
