Wouldn't it be more valuable to your future kids to say "Your Grampa gave me this watch!" instead of "Your Grampa gave me a watch, but I sold it to get you this one...."
Heirlooms are valuable because of the generational sentiments, not $$$$.

Obviously, this is just my opinion: Keep your dad's watch AND buy the one you want. If you can't afford the one you want without selling the one you've got, then wait until you can. If you don't feel that will be anytime soon, then you probably shouldn't be dealing in 4 or 5 figure watches anyway. Of course, at the end of the day, it's yours to do whatever you want with......but we all told you so (and we assume that's why you asked.)

This is a touchy one ... I still have a Datejust I’m debating selling as while I bought it my Dad helped me out where I fell short ... Datejust II ... I recently got the SS Skydweller and think they look so similitude I should sell the Datejust ii

Some decades ago my mother gave me my grandfather's Elgin pocket watch, ca. 1926. I actually wore it for about a decade, back when vests were still a thing for professional attire.

In recent years, despite cleanings, it has acted up some, and I keep it on my desk in a dome. It's just an Elgin, of which approximately seventy gazillion were made. And priceless to me.

{Btw, did OP ever say what he decided? This is a long thread and I haven't tried to read every page.}

Throw it on a leather strap for an updated look and keep it. I couldn't imagine getting rid of something that was passed down to me by family.

Why not? It is a Material thing. His likes may not be yours...

You can't take it with you...

But, having said that, I wouldn't do it...
