Why Did You Buy You First Rolex?

No hard feelings, looking for some honesty here.

I bought a so called waterproof watch when I was in my very early teens with my hard earned money from doing odd jobs and a paper round, but it turned out it wasn't very, and I kept returning it to the retailer when it misted up. After the third or fourth time of returning it the manager, who did keep giving me a new one, said " if you want a proper waterproof watch, buy a Rolex". That statement stuck with me so when I finished school / college, was employed and married, I saved and bought my 1st Rolex when I was 28, back in 1983, I finally owned a 1016 Explorer I still have and wear today. It has never misted, and I still enjoy swimming.

Beautiful story, 1016 is an icon. I felt the same way you acquired your 1st rolex.

So many reasons...

I had wanted a Rolex sub all my life, off and on. And I earn my living doing mostly marine photography and filmmaking. But you know how life goes...

Anyway, my last crap watch had died about 10 years ago. Hadn't even been wearing a watch. I had been part time at the day job and freelancing for years. Decided to go back to the day job full time (which was less hourly but more steady. Just got tired of chasing gigs.) So I bought my first Rolex to celebrate. And so I could mark the time there in style but also have something that would absolutely hold up to the rigors of the work.

I had my first kid,
Turned 30,
10 years as self-employed,
Because I can,
Treat myself,
Proud of my achievements and entering the ranks of Rolex at 30,

Wanted to celebrate all these milestones happening in the same year and the long working hours of the last 10. I am proud of the watch and wear it every day!

With three young kids needed a beater. Rolex robustness is legendary, GMT was a plus, water-resistance proved invaluable. I don't love my BLNR like some of my other watches, but god damn do I respect it.

I bought my first one for my 30th birthday. Wanted one since a teenager, Always knew what they were from a young age as I was bought up knowing, a Rolex is as good as cash. And so far, this has never been proven wrong.
Traded in my 2000 Datejust in 2017 for my Daytona and the price I got was the same as I paid in 2000 taking into account inflation and interest. So the Datejust over 17years, earned me the same amount as if I had left the money in a decent rate savings account. WIN WIN!

Cause i wanted to buy a submariner for many years, i Always liked that look but the persons wearing one have waited me from buying one in that time. Than i found about the explorer 2 and soon it became my 2nd.. I loved that watch, and the gmt but i Always found submariners a watch for wannabe criminals or for lowballers or for nasty persons But at some point i started to realize that i don't care what people think and just bought it because i really liked the design

I had bought lots of cheap watches over the years that didn't last or dated badly.

I had paid off the mortgage and wanted something classic that would last and could be passed on to my kids one day.

because I was tired of lugging around a wall clock on my wrist (Panerai).

I started looking at Submariner & Rolex history etc .. and I was drawn in.

I read an article in a magazine and went and found the watch. A Submariner and it has gone from there. It was about the toughness and the look of the watch back then.

I wanted a pilots watch and actually was about to buy a Breitling Navitimer or IWC Pilot Chrono. The sales Person, who was a friend of my parents, told me to buy a Rolex 16710. i listened to him and have never regretted it :-)

Because it was love at first sight.

Which doesn't seem to be one of your choices.

Yeah, me too, nothing better than wearing this tiny obsolete thing on your wrist that most hot young girls think is some cheap mall watch because you can't even afford an I-watch.

On a serious point, I watched a gameshow where a 20 year old could not read the time on a clock, think in 10 years almost no teenagers will be able to.

No significant event or revelation - I wanted a Rolex, found a used Air King Date on Oyster and went ahead and bought it.Added a new ($400!!!) Jubilee a month later.

Back in circa 1986, the used two tone AK Date was selling for CDN $ 1000.00 so it was a good value too. It rarely left my wrist in the 14 years I owned it. I didn't have a clue about maintenance and it ran trouble free (-3) the entire time which was impressive for a "precision" non-chronometer Rolex. After many years, the daily wear and tear was taking it's toll and the "smallish" 34mm case, the only thing I ever disliked, was traded in for a TT Datejust. I've worn Rolex ever since. Plus a few other favorite pieces.

Mark

Watches using a battery made me crazy!! I was only 20 but knew a GMT would always be running. 30 years later I have been proven right.

I wanted a Tag Heuer Carrera for years but never got one for some reason. When I was ready to buy I´ve visited my AD to have a closer look at the Tag and in the end I bought a Submariner. That´s all.
