Influencing perceptions

I was thinking about this the other day. I typically wear button down shirts with my sleeves rolled up, khakis and usually non-sport sneakers. It’s just what I like. I’m not the kind of person who you would confuse for being “dressed up” without reason (weddings, job interviews, funerals etc).

My watches seem to lift up the status quo (or make it invisible). Part of me thinks that I could show up wearing a trash bag as a shirt but throw on a Rolex or an AP or even a speed master and someone invariably will say something about how good I look LOL.

Anyone else confused by this?

I've seen it all now. Rolex + Trash Bag = Well Dressed ... because the general public is hypnotized by the watch.

Can we stop pretending like wearing wrist watch magically elevates someone to a higher echelon

Well considering this is an example of fall fashion, your garbage bag shirt may just be an example of conservative style. The watch is just a bonus.

People will rarely if ever notice your watch. They will notice what you’re wearing.

I’d say it’s all in your own head

Just wear what is comfortable to you (and situation appropriate); don’t worry about what other’s may, or may not, think.

If you think it works for you, that's cool. But I'm not going to chalk up the failure of the folks around me to notice how good I look to my watches . . . .

Stick with your current style and forget the trash-bag.

Fashion statements aside, though, trash-bags do make good impromptu raincoats during sudden downpours, so keeping a few in the car is not a bad idea, if you live in areas prone to such.

The day I wear a watch to ‘look good’ for/or to impress some one - is the day I GIVE THEM ALL AWAY. PERIOD.

One of the most ridiculous things I’ve read lately - and there’s some SOLID competition.

I wear khakis, a button shirt and footwear like you mentioned. On my day off I wear khaki shorts with a polo shirt and boat shoes. Sometimes I’ll wear a long sleeve shirt with khaki shorts. I wear my SD4k daily. No one has ever commented on my watch.

Casual attire has begin using luxurious fabrics by high end designers. Perhaps they believe your button up/khakis are of those high end brands of casual attire?
