Nice - slightly ghosty bezel.

There’s no cyclops. Is that correct? I’ve seen a 1983 16800 but it’s a flat 4 on the dial. But many do not have a flat 4…

I'm also doing the no cyclops thing. I'm having an independent Rolex trained watchmaker I completely trust try swapping in a fully AR undercoated Clark sapphire crystal that is 'supposed to fit the 16800 well enough it passes the pressure leak test, we will see if it does or not. The crystal does not come with the cyclops, and I prefer it without the cyclops, so I'm not going to add the cyclop. I know some may think I'm a blaspheme for changing anything, but I don't care, it is my watch and I don't care about resale value. It can always be reversed if I wanted to, or if it doesn't truly fit watertight.

I just sent my new to me 16800 to the watchmaker for a full movement service, change the crystal to the AR crystal, replace the seconds hand with original gen tritium, oh, and another thing that may annoy the purists, I'm having him put in the GMT bezel spring because I prefer the bezel to be bi-directional, again, easily returned to uni-directional with the swap of the spring.

Ps between you and me - don't tell anyone - I've got a 1975 four cylinder H1 (now 1000cc) two stroke Kawasaki - should be 3 cylinder 750cc, I fancied modifying it !

Cool! I'm a big fan of the 'sleepers'
I just painted the red brakes on my Tesla Model 3 Performance grey so it doesn't look like a performance model. I took off the badges, and switched from 31 lb 20" wheels to 18 lb 18" wheels. Now this 'sleeper' does 0-60 is just under 3 seconds.

I'm a fan of the no cyclops look, because to me it looks more like the sea dweller, but with a thinner case.

Meant H2 of course.

For those interested, his 'Dodge Viper V10' motorcycle is an utter masterpiece to behold too.

Submariner 16800 Matte Dial Variations

Just saw a 7.4M SN with MK1 dial. Possible? Also do you guys think the bezel is a Flat 4 or service insert?

Looks like newer or service hands? The no 4 a bit different my mk1 but it’s 1980. Maybe a later one as 1982/3 serial.

I asked about the hands cos they look very pristine and the store says they are original.

Comes with box and papers - $13,200.

What do you all think of the case?

The case looks great to me. Yes, it's a little scratched up, but you can still see the chamfers and the lug holes still look crisp. Nice and thick lugs. To me, the price seems a bit high but you can always offer lower.

I think the hands may be service ones. The colour looks a little off too on them (although your first set of pictures look better). Rest looks good.
Is it with a full set eg instructions, tag etc?
The price may be slightly high - but if you have found one you like, and nice full set, maybe don't lose it?
Can you also check the serial number?

Submariner 16800 Matte Dial Variations

Thanks for your comments!

I thought the case was good too, and happy to get some experienced validation here. The hands colour matched the dial lumes nicely when viewing in person so I think they are fine (though they struck me as being too pristine).

The set comes with manuals, anchor and tag.

On the “MK1” dial, I have seen quite a few on 1983 / 7M+ on reputed online sold listings for matte 16800. I think it is fine.

Can anyone comment on the bezel correctness for a 7.4M 16800? It’s listed as a flat 4 insert.

I may nego to buy this if the watch is totally “correct”.

I'm not an expert at inserts. Might I suggest if you're serious about buying the watch, you might want to start a new thread seeking opinions on this one. It might get more visibility that way.
