Sell high (5712) buy low (Dato /1815 Chrono)
I’m in the middle of a watch reorganization, seems like the present time allows for some options that weren’t available in the past. Thinking of trading my 5712a for either the original datograph, or the 1815 chrono. Ironically going from one of the thinnest watches with the superb 240 movement, to a thick substantial piece is the definition of apples and oranges! I love the depth of the Lange with the unobstructed manual wind, but wonder if the thickness would be a problem coming from a thin watch. Would consider the 5170p, however a tad over my current snack bracket given I’ve got my grail 5970p to eventually grab. Any thoughts on letting go of the nauty, it is this the perfect time to move a hot piece for something more complex and substantial?

I love all 3 watches. I do think the 5712 is at its peak. That said, I love the 5712 so I’m not sure if I’d move it. That 5970p though... would love to own it one day.

Terrible idea. Lange prices aren’t going anywhere. If anything they have drifted even lower over the past year. Save up and buy the Dato, but trading a 5712 for one is a bad call. FWIW I’ve owned 2 Datos, nice watches.

Agree. I wouldn’t either. A lot of people say they like the Dato but secondary market refutes this. Lange aren’t in high demand hence poor resale value.

I wish I had a Dato to trade!!! I would keep the 12 and might trade it in towards the 5970P someday.

If you're tired of the Naut then I would parlay it into the WG Black Lange, but I wouldn't sell it just because of the price leverage, far too nice a piece for that.

Well it’s such a great bang for your buck watch on the secondary market. So well made, absolute tanks. Of course it’s a value trap. They are poorly marketed and frankly overproduced. They make what 5000-10,000 watches a year? They need to make half that and simplify the lines, they all look the same anyway.

There are rumors of imminent discontinuation of the 5712...
And the 5712 is very hard to get from the AD. The pain of getting one offsets all the monetary rewards from selling it. |

5712a wouldn't be one I'd easily let go..... But if you're not feeling it.. This market is perfect for selling.

The 12 is too nice of a watch for the trade IMHO.

They are both really nice, but I think the 12 will better hold its value.

I would stay the course and keep your Patek's. Long term value wise you will probably be ahead and are becoming harder to buy. Just my opinion.

I echo the comments of not selling a 5712 for a lange.
One of the life lessons ive learned in my career is that people dont know how to be greedy enough! Let the prices go up and reassess after prices plateu. |

I think trading for a Lange at today’s high Patek Nautilus is a smart move for the long term.
What goes up would eventually comes down. Just a matter of time IMO. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I can’t in good conscience recommend this move, you don’t move a Patek for a Lange. It’s like moving a Rolex for a breitling

Having owned both (2014-present) I can tell you the following:
- Going after resale value and modern pre-owned prices is one way to view this. - The alternative way through which one may have a go at this is from the purist and enjoyment point of view, i.e. as if you are keeping or acquiring either and will not flip it thereafter. - The 5712/1A was the only timepiece I have had (I had many) that even till today I cannot fault at all. Yes it may not have a chrono complication but everything on it is extremely well thought and executed. The bracelet, the case thickness, all complications, the wonderful dial, the sub-dials positioning, the screw-down crown, the fact that you can unscrew the crown and wind the movement w/o being afraid to mistakenly adjust the time or date, the open back, etc. - The original 39mm Dato is a true horology King, with a capital "K". It is the watch that made Patek go and design their own in-house chrono movement. The first Dato is a milestone in horological art, it is the reference piece by which all other chronographs are compared against. It has a truly mesmerizing dial (oxidized sterling slver), fantastic legibility, amazing strap, the softest chrono pushers you will ever get to feel, and wears solidly. - However the Dato lacks the power reserve complication and is not a watch that you can easily wear 24/7 (especially if you prefer to wet the watch quite often), therefore by definition the 5712/1A is a more versatile option. - If you care about resale value and current PP Nautilus pre-owned market prices, better do not bother with a Lange otherwise the flip will haunt you. This is reality. ALS can't beat PP (and especially the Nautilus line) in that area. But this has nothing to do with horology. For many people wearing and enjoying a 39mm Lange Dato has nothing to do with how much other brands or models appreciate or depreciate over time. My personal take is that the 5712/1A is not a better watch than the Dato, but it is a much more complete watch. As much as the Dato proves that the Germans can make better watches than Patek, PP is still PP. A steel Nautilus is a watch and a jewel at the same time, it's unobtrusive and holds value like nothing else. So to part with a 5712/1A the only way is if you need to go one level up. That may be a 5990, a 5930, a 5970, a 5980R or whatever else in that territory. I discovered this through experience - therefore don't make the same move unless you are 1000% certain.

I would only add. The 5712/1A is just too nice and could be an only watch. As another poster mentioned it's a very "complete" watch - not necessarily the best at anything (e.g. movement finishing, WR, etc.) but it gets high marks in a lot of essential categories for me (e.g. design, usefulness of complication, wearability, elegance, etc.) The Datograph is a horological wonder with the beautifully finished and intricate movement, but it loses points in wearability for me. It's still on my list of long-term "must haves", but there's no rush or impetus to acquire one on my end.

I wouldn’t do that. At a bare minimum wait until after Basel.

I would only trade the 5712 for something that is as strong or better in the second hand market, i.e not a Lange
