The story is as follows (and I've had both):

1) When owning the steel, you crave the heft and elegance of rose gold. True story I felt that way.
2) When owning the rose gold, you crave the lightness barely there true stealth wealth under the radar of the steel. You also worry about the softness of the metal and how easily it scratches.

The grass is always greener. Other than the age old wisdom of "own both", I would stick with the steel but sometimes you truly don't know unless you spend a few weeks on the wrist.

I own both and I go through phases where I prefer one then the other. The R can be flashy despite the rubber strap. They’re both surprising dressy and sporty.

I’d hate to choose but if I had to and assuming I wasn’t speculating on the stainless steel model being discontinued soon, I’d pick the 5167R.

With all your SS I'd go RG here, the gold finish is delightful.

I would keep the A. More suited to the rubber strap.

You said it. Im extra weary when wearing an RG vs steel. Just own both and wear them both with equal amount of wrist time (or try to)

Well I have an R and love it. I don’t know if i’d define it as an upgrade but it’s definitely a different watch and I’m glad I made the jump.
It’s still ‘fairly’ discreet in a world full of Rolex but it gets more compliments from non-WIS’s than the steel.

No regrets whatsoever. I feel the r is on another level
Since you have owned both references, do you use the (r) as a daily watch, or by getting the PM did the nature of how your wear this reference change? I just realized that i gravitate to the (a) for daily use duties. i'm curious if the (r) would change my current habits, i.e. worrying about dings, scratches, or unwanted attention. your thoughts appreciated!

do you use both (a) and (r) for the same activities? or do you find you are more selective when the (r) comes out to play? i am struggling with respect to the possible change in the way i use this reference. will the gold make me think twice what i'm doing that day, versus when i wear the (a) it doesn't matter what is on the agenda because it can handle all duties. . .

I struggle with gold. I just turned 40 and still think it would be an issue for me. Just too "loud" and attention grabbing. Special occasions or dinners with the wife? Sure. But for regular wear, I wouldn't be comfortable.

Not too much but some, prefer 90's or so rap if anything (wu tang, dre, tribe, etc). Still wouldn't wear gold, I do not really like the attention it draws and see no need for it. You are paying strictly for the material and I appreciate these watches much more so for their mechanics, so the metal type doesn't do anything for me. That said, the gold is pretty, just not for me at this time in my life. That may change as I get older.

At 45, I am up for gold dress watches, but gold sports models are a bit too ostentatious for my career and lifestyle. At the end of the day, Patek's gold sports watches are beautiful, but I am left to appreciate them on other people's wrists.

I am not a fan of color metal but I unabashedly adore Patek’s rose gold. It’s richly warm and rather subtle if you can believe it. No one ever notice when I wear mine, except one time at Best Buy when a sales associate shouted out NAUTILUS to my face! Turned out to be a WIS.

I was just teasing. I dont like the gold on the aquanaut. I like it on the nautilus and my DD40 but thats only because my wife is an enabler.

I thought the same as you, until I saw the 5167/r for the first time. It's not loud at all, in fact, none of my family members and friends have noticed it the 3 months after I got it. (And they all know I'm into watches)

Yes, I use both for the same activities. In fact, the 67/r is my daily and I have stopped wearing anything else. In my case it can definitely handle everything. I used to wear a 116500 daytona daily before the 67a and r and I treat all equal.

I agree with Patek rose gold. The warmth is just stunning. No one ever notices my 67/r either.
I got way, way more reactions to any of my former AP's on bracelet. If you want to attract attention, an RO bracelet is the way to go...

I have seen the 5167R in person and had the opportunity to buy it. I passed and got the 5164a a bit later. I agree it's not as severe since it's on strap but still too much for me.

Side note, pretty sure I have your old blue 15300 you sold to Trahn.

Funny looking 5711a! ;)

For those thinking the gold is ostentatious, it’s not. The Patek rose is very warm and subtle, the 5167r is not a ‘shouty’ watch at all

I have seen Patek's rose gold in person... It's definitely warm and subtle (I guess) for gold. Still, it's going to attract more attention than stainless steel or white gold. The 5167R likely doesn't shout as much on account of the rubber strap. It's definitely a great looking watch, but I prefer the 5167A.

Fair enough.. It is definitely not for everyone... Funny thing you mentioned the 64, as I am waiting for it also...

I think I remember you posting it and I had that thought! lol I flew to Japan to collect that one.... I remember letting it go because the dial color felt very different from the 5712 I owned... Would get it back in a split second if I could find one for the same price.... Unfortunately those days are long gone now... enjoy the watch!
