Buying a Submariner (need insight)
Hello,
I have been looking at different timepieces and have decided on going with a Submariner 14060. I'm not opposed to buying a pre owned Rolex but would like to get some advice/insight on the process. I came across a listing on Craig's list but am not comfortable spending that kind of money from a private seller without being educated. Would you look at the link to the listing and let me know your thoughts. He has several other Rolex for sale, so I've added them as well. I live within driving distance so I would have access to see in person. What questions should I be asking when dealing with a private seller or someone other than an authorized dealer? http://lexington.craigslist.org/jwl/3634607112.html http://lexington.craigslist.org/jwl/3713962426.html http://lexington.craigslist.org/jwl/3713968305.html Thank you! |

Speaking personally would never buy a Rolex of Craigslist unless I new the seller 100% far better places to buy a Rolex like our own forum for-sale.

Acquiring the knowledge needed to spot a well made fake is not an easy thing to accomplish, especially with a relatively short time.
I would advise you to avoid private deals especially on craigslist. In any case, at that price you might as well find one here on the forum, and get it from someone with solid references. If you still want to stick with this private deal your only option is to meet at an AD and have them look at it. Cheers, Al. |

If you know nothing about authentic Rolex, either buy at an AD or invest the time to know the brand and the products. Stay away from Craigslist. It's at best for advanced buyers, and otherwise a gigantic risk.

Assuming you would like to purchase this watch, the plus is that it was serviced by Rolex recently and the guy is a NAWCC member which means he may have an established track record online.
As was stated by others far more knowledagle above..the big issue is - is the watch he hands you the one in the picture? or the one serviced by rolex? My suggestion would be to ask if he would meet you at an authorized dealer to verify it....if he agrees that is a good sign, meet there, get it authenticated then buy it. If he balks or hesitates at the idea...then walk away. Anyone selling a real rolex should be more than understanding in wanting it verified. just my 2 cents

Thank you all for the feedback and suggestions. Last week I took ownership of a Submariner 14060m from a seller on the forum. I could not be happier!!
