Rolex 5500 is it real or fake
I am not sure what is up here I was looking at a 5500 on Ebay and met a
very happy soul selling a 5500 Explorer with a 1002 case back. As I understand it that is a dead give away to at least a frankan watch. He says it was checked by Rolex Canada. Hmm what do you think. Is it put together or could it be all original? I will give him the benefit of the doubt. He said I should post it and see if he is right. So here it is. I WAS looking at buy one but maybe not from him, Not to cool lets say Maybe just the 1016 not as many fakes I think! Is the dial legit? He said that the second link was a total fake So little help. You can get a 1016 for that money (and maybe a little patience).
Lume/hands don't match.. No bracelet.. IDK about that watch. The inconsistency in the dial is really jarring to my eyes. |

It's always going to be questionable. Get. A. 1016. They Are bigger and not as questionable. Plus....this 5500 is a fortune

The problem with the 5500 Exp is that it's almost impossible to find one that is all original. There are many real ones out there but without papers it's impossible to know. The 1002 case back isn't a dead give away but the handful I've seen had 5500 casebacks. This may or may not be 100% all the time though. Also, there is an unconfirmed rumor that the Explorer dial could be specified on the AK and changed at the AD. Who knows though?
Watch 1 should have a gilt dial with gilt hands, pass. Dial also looks too new Watch 2 the dial looks a bit...unoriginal. My advice: if you have to have a 5500 Explorer, wait until one with papers shows up. It's a rare watch so they're not going to show up every night on the sales forum but they do. Vet them hard first.

I've got a 5500 Explorer with a 1002 caseback ...... It was one of my early purchases and I was a bit impulsive and didn't really do my research.
I've posted mine on VRF and the general consensus was that I had a service dial from the 70's. But in reality, it's virtually impossible to know and because of the price difference compared to an AirKing, many of the ones you see on eBay will be converted Airkings with refinished dials..... So be very careful.... As others have said because of the rarity, look for a reputable seller and papers whenever you can.....eBay doesn't tick those boxes for me...... |
