Rolex watches - removed from circulation

As time progresses and Rolex continues to crank out more watches, how many or how often do you think any of them get removed from circulation? As a prestigious brand so widely known throughout the world, it is no coincidence they are highly regarded, well kept, stored in safe places, and not too often disposed of.....

Let's think about this: insurance companies tend to charge somewhere around 1% of the value of a watch per year. Since they want to turn a profit, that means there's way less than a 1% chance of a total loss on a watch during any given year. Even then it is debatable if watches that are stolen or lost are "out of circulation".

its actually an interesting thought and i have wondered the same... with 700k ish watches produced per year every year and at some point you would think you would actually see more around in the wild. I see more Rolex than any other brand IRL but still its not as common as the math would suggest.

There must be thousands of brand new discontinued models sat in safes around the world or in Rolex HQ etc?

Imagine that as a find. A tray of brand new never worn 1680 red Subs or Newman Daytona's....

I suspect this means lost, thrown away, worn out, etc. Those that were sold and no longer exist for what ever reason.

I also don't see them that much in real life, but I notice they are on TV a lot, and not just on celebs but even on members of the public who are contestants or doing well, so I think new money and achievers really do buy Rolex, if they put their money into watches.

Do you thing Rolex is the type of company that would sell those watches to employees at cost?

Or, are they like a baker and just dispose of the unsold models - like in a recycling furnace somewhere?

I don’t think there are many unsold models to dispose of. This is part of the reason why Rolex doesn’t care to increase SS production. They sell everything they make.

I think the vast majority are not in circulation. Quite often they are the watch I am going to give to my kids when I die. Who knows if the grand children will keep them, or toss them out since they don’t work anymore or are though to be fakes.
