Montblanc 149- should I buy?

Dear friends, good afternoon. Last few weeks I have been thinking about buying a good GO and want uses MB. I saw an add and not sure about the authenticity of the pen. When I looked at the rim at pen cap end, it does not look right to me. I am a newbie in this area. I would appreciate your views on this please. Attached few pictures from seller(not very clear though) and there is some personalisation on the cap too. Unfortunately i would not be able to go and see this person due to long travel. Thanks in advance. Kosgad

It is not a 149 or even a 146. It may not even be a Montblanc but it is certainly not a 149 or 146.

Why do you say it isn't a 149?
It looks like a 149 to me, but I would not say I can guarantee that it is a 149.
I can say that it has an 'oblique' nib which may or may not have been disclosed by the seller.
I'd definitely ask for more photos.

Thanks for the comments. I did not know that this pen holds oblique nib. I have attached few more pictures. I would like to know if this pen looks genuine. When I looked the cap end where montblanc and meisteratuck engraved does not appear good to me. How ever I don't have any knowledge in this area. Would appreciate opinions of experienced pen users in this forum. Thank you

There does not seem to be an ink window. Both the 146 and 149 have always had ink windows.

An authentic pen but there is no way to say it is an authentic Montblanc and it is NOT a 149 or 146. It MIGHT be a 145 which is a small cartridge pen or a 147 that is 146 size but a cartridge only pen.

If you look at photo 3 of 8 there is in fact the usual slotted ink window.

Why are you guys telling this guy erroneous information.

The close up of the nib shows the tip appears to be cut at an angle which indicates that it is an oblique nib.

The nib says 14k which is not what I would expect, but is this the white gold 149? I'm not sure. Is this an earlier model 149 again I can't say.

I would be reluctant to buy a pen with a personalised signature cap, as that would mean nothing to me, apart from resale price.

On the cap ring it should state "149" but the seller has not shown that, this makes me a little suspicious.

From the photos the shape of the pen & cap tend to make me think this is a 146 as it is more elongated than the chunkier and stout shape of the 149.

I'd say pass, but definitely if you want to proceed more information and detailed clear photographs are required.

I still don't see an ink window in that picture, but the point is the person asked for our opinions.

Thanks once again. This pen has been advertised as meisterstuck platinum coated 149. I was told that this pen has piston filling mechanism. In fact I spoke to the seller and he clearly struggles to take ma to kind of shots. I think I have to give it a miss in view of various concerns.
Thanks for all your suggestions which was really helpful in making my mind. Kind regards.

OK well the platinum makes sense to me.
If he could show you the "149" printed on the cap ring, then I would say it is genuine.

Thanks lol.
I do think that the cap has any numbers on the ring. I looked at this bit hazy picture of pen cap and the letter engraving( especially M) does not look crisp. Picture attached. Also lack of ink window which I thought a norm in 146/149.For some reason the seller has issues in sharing quality pictures. May be he is truly struggling to capture the fine details of the pen. Thanks.

While I don’t hold myself out as having a MB specialist’s knowledge - the inability to see it in person - and without sharp macro photo’s - I sense there is greater risk with this seller.

For those reasons I’d not be a buyer at any price.

Yes I agree with you on the very high risk associated. May have to find a different seller. Thanks.

Remember, while Montblanc is an easily recognized brand, they are not really exceptional pens. There are a brazillion makers of pens as nice or maybe even nicer than anything from Montblanc. I've sold off or given away all but about a half dozen of so of my Montblancs.

I would pick any one of these over a Montblanc 149 any day of the week:

It is NOT a 149 P

I agree... Not a 149 and as a 146 I also do not see an ink window after I blew up image 3 and played with the brightness, contrast, saturation and so forth. Looks like a reflection.

I would stay away. Too many 149s out there that are reasonably priced and legit.

Totally agree. Window is visible. Shape indicates a 146.

If you want to be more confident ask for pictures of the clip. Should either state germamy or a serial based on it's age.

None would be a NO GO RED LIGHT.

A 149 is a very personal pen, I only bought one once on ebay used. I didn't keep it very long. If it works for you fine, but the way the nib writes and its size and specifications can vary from pen to pen.

Some guys say they want only a Rolex which has been untouched by other customers. I think that is not really essential, but with a pen, I think it is better the newer the pen the better it is for me.

I wouldn't touch this pen with a 10 foot pole. Not because its not genuine. In fact, it looks like a legit 146 from the limited resolution of the pictures. I can clearly see the lines of the ink window below the screw-on threads. But its not a 149 and its not platinum either. The second pictures clearly shows a gold finish.

But its too beat up. The finish is coming off the middle ring of the three cap ring and you can actually see the copper alloy underneath showing through. Thats why the "M" on the cap doesn't look crisp as OP was saying. Theres green oxidation on sides of the body of the nib. Plus who wants to buy a pen with another dude's name on it? Lol. I mean really. There's probably a reason all the pictures from this dude suck; so that you can't see all the imperfections.

That being said, its still a pen and if its functional might do SOME good. Offer $25. But don't let this bozo tell you its a platinum 149.

I would definitely pass on any pen that has such poor quality pictures. I like the 146 and 149 and enjoy both.

I believe the nib on the older pens was 14 and 18 on the newer.
