Interesting encounter

I was sitting at the airport and a priest/brother sat across from me. About a minute later he says that a beautiful watch (I had on my 116519LN). I said thanks. He than pulls up his sleeve and he had on a Patek 5712R. I was a little surprised. I told him that is a beauty as well. We talked watched for a few minutes.

Very cool. I've never owned a Patek but have recently been looking into them a bit more. Always fun to run into someone that appreciates watches!

Weird

a priest (catholic at least) are supposed to live a "simple life" IE modest and a Brother usually has vows of poverty. I know the high up bishops and things seem to have a lot of stuff but its not usually personal property.

Then again it wasn't a SS Nautilus so he wasn't really showing off

Maybe it was a fake he picked up in Cambodia after helping kids in an orphanage?

j/k!

I'd like to think there is a story behind how he got his watch.

Let's not judge. It could have been a gift from his father, or family or any number of other reasonable means.

I would never donate money to church or in this case (in asia) any buddhism organization, I frequently see monks and nuns in first class when I flew, they are as corrupted as any businesses.

And they always have a good excuse, one religious leader in Taiwan gets chauffeured around in a Rolls Royce, when confronted by a reporter, he says it was a generous donation by a wealthy believer.

And those guys are completely rational in their belief (and comfort) in knowing one good watch is enough watch for anybody.

Excuse me friends but I differ with most. Why should the expensive watch of a priest necessarily suggest a poverty of Spirit..? After all, 'Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesars, and to God the things that are Gods'. Its the value we attach to material things that matters.

It may not be the intent of the OP, but the thread could have degenerated into a controversial discussion of religion and the people involved.
