Why Do ADs Say Stupid Stuff?

I visited a couple ADs today, looking to try on a blue dial DJ41 with oyster bracelet. I need up trying on a fluted DJ with oyster and black diamond dial. It looked surprisingly good and understated.

However, I thought it was unnecessary for the salesman to say to me, as he pointed to a half full DJ case, "You better buy it today, that case is going to be empty next week and Rolex isn't going to send us any more until next year.

Yeah, dumb comment. Unnecessary. But I'd imagine with all the calls and drop ins they get by people looking for a Sub, Daytona, etc. and having no stock of them they have to do something when a buyer shows real interest in a DJ. It's too bad they have such poor ideas of how to motivate someone to buy.

Funny thing happened while in the shop. There were two guys picking up a watch that had been purchased. It was a TT DJ41 with champagne diamond dial. I said, "Oh, you have a DJ41, as well." While the new owner was trying it on, his friend looked at the DJ41 I had on with oyster, fluted, and black diamond dial and said to his friend, "His looks better than yours, too."

So what happens if you go back in 2 weeks to purchase and there aren't any more DJs, with no new shipments expected until after the Swiss Christmas holiday season manufacturing shut-down is over?

Admit it. That would be friggin' hilarious. Just imagine the look on your face.

Would love to have called him/her out right then and there... cringe worthy statement. I might have walked right out after hearing that.

I guess that's where true salesmanship comes along. There are always good sales people and bad ones . This guy or girl just happened to be the bad apple in the sales team and said something stupid

Thats used car salesman tactics. "Oh I gotta a guy coming to look at it. Better buy now."

Did the salesman have on a silk shirt, gold chain and plaid pants?

I would have roundhouse kicked him in the head and then done gymnast handsprings out the door, down the sidewalk, and up onto my horse tied to a parking meter and galloped out of town whooping and hollering, emptying my Peacemakers at the sky.

You should have told the AD, in the next minute you will be out of the shop and your wallet will be full :)

I was in an AD a few months back , and the sales guy said the reason gold Rolex are so much more expensive is because every part of the watch is gold , including all the movement and movement parts .
I was going to think of something witty to say to him but all I could manage was

“No they’re not!”

It's annoying because you are in the know as a member here, but this spiel will work on most casual buyers and walk ins who can see there are no sports models at all and half the DJs have gone.

ive seen them apply the scarcity model across watches it clearly doesnt apply to as well. Some have also been known to pull explorer II's for example from the display case so when someone asks about one they pull it out of the safe and say that it has a WL or something but you can buy it today. It adds urgency to the decision process if you dont know any better.

Your average sells guy probably has an idea about the SS sports model shortage and just assumes all Rolex’s are flying off the shelf and maybe they are at that AD, who knows. Life is too short to be worried about what they said, just be happy you’re in the position to be shopping for a new watch. I would give him a break and shrug it off.
