Completing the Trinity...Long Journey to First Patek

Started collecting watches a couple years ago and it spawned off my love of racing and cars. Interestingly, each brand possesses its own panache just as cars do (movements like engines)....always likened AP to Lambos (flashy), Rolex to Porsche’s (robust and with strong motors), Vacheron to Aston Martin (sophisticated elegance), Jaeger LeCoultre to Mercedes (engines to many others), and Patek, well perhaps, Pagani! King of Kings!

I had an immediate affinity to Vacheron Constantin for its time honored tradition and elegance - picked up an Overseas Dual Time and a 1952 Toledo.

I’ve also loved Jaeger LeCoultre with its over 1100 movements and several patents - acquired a Reverso and a Duometre.

Eventually fell for the AP’s and most frequently wear my openworked to work and my ceramic diver on weekends with the kids playing sports.

Expanded to German engineering with the Zeitwerk....such a complicated movement analogous to the CGT.

I searched and waited quite some time for the right Patek to complete the Trinity. I lusted for a 5712 for quite some time. However, when I tried a friend’s on, I was disappointed by how light it felt...so the search continued.
Finally, came upon the 5990 and it is absolutely sublime!
Had to give up my Duometre for it but the 5990 is such a fine specimen. Firstly, the feel and finish on the watch is perfection. The bracelet wraps perfectly around the wrist far superior to any other bracelet I have ever worn.
The weight of the 5990 also feels perfect - not too light and enough heft to feel its presence.
The gradient of the dial is mesmerizing in different angles of lighting.
I haven’t been this excited to wear a watch in a long, long time.
Without further a due, here is the unboxing

What an incredible piece as your first Patek, congrats!! Awesome addition to an already great collection, particularly love that openworked!

Are all those cars yours as well? The Carrera GT is just unbelievable, definitely one of the best sounding cars, but really just one of the best cars overall.

Yessir, it definitely is an iconic car with a place in history. Over 70 patents on this car alone, all carbon fiber with the lightest ceramic clutch of its era....essentially a Lemans racecar clothed in streetcar form. The NA V10 sound is the most epic jet-like sound of it’s era and perhaps of all time. I liken it to a 6263 Daytona that I’d love to own as my first Rolex, some day.

What a dream of a car. I remember seeing one in person at an auto show when it first came out, would love to see one in person again some day!

Congrats, great first PP! I agree with your car comparisons altho Patek and Lange are the Rolls and Bentley for me as they are still dress watch firms predominantly... altho the times are a changin'.
