My first vintage! I think?
So, what's the demarcation for vintage exactly? If I screwed this up I'll show myself out.
Just picked up a sweet single owner 16753 born in 1984. Is 35 years vintage? I hope so. Regardless, my Clint Eastwood dreams have come true. Really super excited about this watch. I will freely admit I have always been a bit nervous about taking the plunge into older watches, but have been looking at older GMTs for years. Finally found a vintage dealer that I was very comfortable with and spent a great deal of time searching for just the correct one. Ended up with what I think is a true gem. Single owner watch, completely unmolested since new. No polish, no parts replacement. It has some scratches and dings, but is in remarkable original shape. Came with all the boxes, papers, manuals, calendar cards, etc. as the day it was sold. I am super pumped about this watch! And I hope 35 years makes the cut so I am not shown the door!

Thank you very much! The funny thing I learned about vintage during this experience is it takes a BUNCH more hunting to find the right one vs. modern stuff. But the journey is a helluva lot of fun (if a bit daunting for a first timer).
The problem is, now I REALLY like this vintage hunting thing.

What a stunning example!
Ticks all the boxes that one. I am not particularly fond of two tone, but heck I would wear that one proudly! They seldom come that nice, great catch! |

Thanks buddy! I had to look a LONG time to find one in this condition totally unmolested and original. Well, to be honest, over the last year I found a couple of other ones that were this nice or even nicer, but they were out of the range I was willing to pay. So, took some major patience to get this one. Totally worth it!

My first vintage was a 16753 too. Not a root beer but it was a traditional.
Beautiful watch that I wish I would have kept. Gosh at the time (early 20002) I think I paid $3000.. My 16753 and 1680 are two of the watches dearly wish I would have kept. Going forward I never sold a watch again no matter how little wrist time it got. Btw nice crown guards! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Nice watch! Just to be the contrarian, I say not vintage. My TT DJ is a 1984, and its not vintage either. It’s not just the age, but the internal and external changes that determine vintage.

Open 9's !!
I think that helps the vintage criteria.

Now, that is just plain funny!!! Open 9s as a criteria for vintage...that's a good one!

If you look at my signature you can see I love all Rolex (even owned a Cellini Prince for a short time), but GMTs are where my heart is at. Which makes me wonder what my next target should be? Fat lady? 1675 Pepsi? 16750? Go a little out of the box and look for a TOG? Something else? I need something to spend a year or more searching for.

Thanks so much everyone! Very exciting to enter the world of vintage. I feel like I have either owned or currently own almost every watch (not just Rolex but other brands as well in the past) I have really ever wanted from the past 20 years. There are a couple more targets eventually, but not much.
Vintage feels like it opens up a whole new world of possibilities. Plus, to be honest, I really enjoyed the "search" aspect of it. Took me over a year to source this watch. Sure, I love getting an AD call for a BLNR or BLRO, but there was no search there. It was just sit on the list and wait. This vintage stuff is a completely different beast. It was fun. It also limits your spend because it can be such a journey to find what you are looking for. Good times all around and kind of breathes life back into the hobby for me.
