Caseback

I recently acquired what I feel like is an exquisite example of a 1675 with MK2 dial. This comes from the original owner and the caseback has his initials engraved. I actually kind of appreciate the engraving. It reminds me of the watches provenance. But if I were to ever sell it, I suppose a clean caseback would be more appealing to the general public? Should I seek out a period appropriate caseback?

I would either leave it alone or have the engraving removed. Keeping it original is not only more appropriate but also probably a better financial decision as well.

I would keep it original. It is not that hard to find another case back. Based on the serial number, case backs are not dated after 1972.

Also, I would like to comment that your super fat font bezel insert is very nice - these were found on the late Mark I and early Mark II dials.

How are the casebacks prior to 1972 dated? I assume by some kind of serial number?

Quarter + last two years. So fourth quarter of 1970 would be IV 70

Engravings on the caseback are really cool in my opinion.
I would not change anything.

I agree, I don’t mind engravings. What I’m considering is simply purchasing a period-appropriate caseback and sitting on it just in case I wanted a clean look in the future. I would of course hang on to the original caseback as well. I figure purchasing one of these now would be a good move since everything Rolex seems to be rising in value.

I would not feel the need of it but if you find one in a nice condition and you feel more comfortable like this, go for it !
