Compass on ur rolex
My friend is a hiker so he want to attach those mini compass that u slide onto the band. Is it safe since it contains magnet, or is the magnet is too small to affect the movement? Has anyone tried it on n share the experience? Thanks
I blame it on the autoconnect. |

Just get a GMT/Exp2, set the GMT hand to home time, instant compass.

any cheap watch with 24hr hand and bezel will work. the magnetic field generated from a compass is hard to image being more than the earth's which is 0.5 gauss or so depending where you are. |

I don't know if it's safe or not...I just wouldn't do it.

I do the same with my Panerai dive watch. No GMT function and sun underwater. No issues to date.

I believe in the northern hemisphere if you point the hour hand at the sun, the GMT hand should point to true north.

Tough at night however. I'd certainly hope there would be no problem.

Though having the GMT complication makes it easier, actually any watch will do.
While this technique is quite useful for most urban type navigation (which way is the beach or which direction do I turn after exiting the freeway), if the guy is a serious hiker out in the wilderness or is hiking after sunset, I'd advise a compass if not GPS. Quote:
The two hands must be synched to the local time you are in. And it is an approximation since it will of course vary depending on where in the time zone you are. Also keep in mind DST.

There is barely enough magnetic field in those compasses to do anything but point, they are certainly unlikely to magnetize anything.
It's what you use to determine if a watch is magnetized because it will point to the magnetized watch instead of north.

👍 that's what my friend has in mind. He has a sub. There is no point for him to spend thousands for a gmt just for the compass function. I blame it on the autoconnect. |

On any watch with hands, in northern hemisphere, in winter (no DST):
Point the hour hand at the sun; halfway between the hour hand and 12' is south. |

I put one on my old sub bracelet and went hiking. Early on I realized it was not working properly and used our Brunton. Thank goodness we brought that along. When I took off the compass from the bracelet, it left a scratch. Those little compasses just are not that great.
