Comex Found?

Greetings! This is my first time on the site and my first foray into Rolex. I wear Panerai today but love the vintage Rolex.

To get to the point, I was at a convention of collectors yesterday and stumbled on what appeared to be a genuine Comex Sub sitting in a display case with a vintage leather strap. I thought nothing of it at first but then did a quick google search to remind me of the rarity of the Comex. The asking price for this watch was $5,500. I was a bit shocked and am wondering if it's a fake or a fake dial etc. I may go back today to take pictures. Aside from reference numbers, what would be some other indicators that it's not genuine?

Given that this was a convention of knowledgeable collectors I was surprised to see the price and am wondering if they're pretending to not know what it is and sell a fake one at an inflated price.

Any help you can provide is much appreciated!

You would need to verify the model of sub as well as the serial number to see if it falls into the correct range of time for the Comex. Then you would need to ask if there is any documentation for the piece.
At that price, most likely it isnt a true Comex. I give it a very small % that its authentic, especially in its environment.

Many fake dials out there. Be careful. Make some HQ photos and post them here.

I suspect that in a convention of knowledgeable collectors (assuming they collect watches, obviously) you wouldn't see a real one being sold for that price, nor a fake one being sold at all. I'm curious to know what you will find out about this watch.

I would suspect that it isn't truly a Comex, but someone's project, hence the price

Attached are the photos I took. The bezel and dial both had a blue/navy color to them. The seller said he knew the dial had been replaced because he had it checked out but i don't know if that means whoever checked it out saw the logo and figured it had been replaced or knew for sure it was a different dial and not a real Comex.

Let me know what you think. Thanks again!

Doesn't look right eventhough I know almost nothing about comexes. Walk away..

The guy selling it obviously knows it is shit as the price is as it is. Quite bad form to be honest.

Since you could still see it a day later - at that asking price - and in a room full of knowledgeable collectors - the answer should be clear...

But the key is "replaced dial". Rolex isn't printing NOS COMEX dials. A service dial would be blank despite the head having been made for a bulk COMEX order. Very likely a refinished dial.

Thanks all. I figured it was too good to be true as well and upon looking at it closer, it did seem a bit rough and just not right.

We've seen that artist's work elsewhere...

This is something like what he was aiming for :

...but with the rarer, inverted depth / Submariner text.

Move along quickly now !

That's just straight up insulting. Who's the seller trying to fool?! What a piece of you know what.

I would wager that is a fake dial. The round markers are HUGE... Like a maxi dial.
