5712 as a daily/only watch?

Hi all,

I've have been considering consolidating my small collection into one Patek Phillipe watch and wearing it daily. I am looking at a steel version of the 5712 and was wondering if any current/previous owners could shed some light on the watch.

As I have never owned a Patek piece before, I was wondering whether the 5712 could be worn as a daily watch and whether it could withstand daily wear and tear.

Is the 5712 as scratch prone as the AP Royal Oak models? Also, I am concerned that the movement may be a bit too fragile for me to wear it on a daily basis.

Easily could be a daily.

I wore my 5711 regularly, I did value the added water resistance for a daily.

A great daily, but the bezel will scratch. Not sure what else is in your collection, but if you can swing it, the 5712/1a and a Rolex Sub (or preferably the SDc) make one helluva pair.. Covers all occasions...

It's a great candidate for a one and done, however the service can be long, so ideally you'd have another watch.

great daily watch , no worry on the movement cal.240 withstand most of the tortures my only concern is the seaside i m not bring her to the sea/boating/surfing etc. others do .
it s not a tool watch but get a gshock too and you are done.

I agree . I don't think I can really wear the 5712 as a true tool watch and I would need a daily beater if I am worried about scratches.

Ideally I would like to have a ceramic Daytona and the 5712, but my funds are limited and I have no idea when I would be able to get my hands on a DaytonaC.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll probably have to postpone my plans on acquiring a 5712 until I can afford to keep both a ceramic Daytona and a 5712 in my collection.

5712 it's an awesome watch; if you are too conscious about scratches is better to keep it in a rotation because is very prone to them ; if you are not, then I don't see a problem to be your daily. I think even though the Daytona is awesome, 5712 would pair better with a sub. Daytona is not a true beater specially because the PCL's but again if you don't care about that, then it would be fine.

My experience is that the AP is much more of a scratch magnet.

I am a bit conscipus about scratches and especially scratches on the bezel. That neing said, I don't mind scratches on the bracelet as it is nearly impossible to keep bracelets scratch-free.

It's quite thin but the bezel will still mark up easily, so for a beater I'd go with a ceramic Rolex or Omega.

Definitely could be a daily, I think it's a very versatile piece

Agree with others. It's not a tool watch, so won't do well in the water etc, but paired with a cheaper dive watch and you'll be good to go.

I wear mine as a daily and it holds up perfectly. I don't even have a hairline on it yet as it is a very flat watch.
I do have some other watches for taking beatings on such occasions.

They say 3-5 years but personally I'd say it depends on how well it is running and how much it is used. I'm not going to send all of mine in every 5 years if they're mostly sitting in the safe unless they're running badly.

if you wear the watch and enjoy the watch, enjoy your scratches, you've earned them.

if it scratches or not is honestly irrelevant to me if it is going to be my 1 and done.

sure, why not but watch out the bezel cos it pick up scratch mark really easy..

It would be a great daily if you don't mind some scratches adding character to your Patek

Can be a daily, dependent on what your daily activities are and how "OK" you are with marks and scratches. For an office job, most likely yeah, good to go. Construction? Wouldn't recommend it.

Yes, but i would not dive with it. Case and bracelet hold very well. Steel is not that easy to "eat" down.
If you are not obsessed with little scratches and not polish it every year is fine.

Its def doable. Just get a tudor black bay to go along with it for anything rough you'd be involved with and you'll be great to go. Also, the 5712 actually looks magic with some character marks on it with the thinner bezel. The thicker nautilus models look a little more beaten with character marks so to speak. You'll love the watch!

I use mine as a daily driver. Sure it will catch little scratches here and there, but I enjoy wearing it each day, so I'm not worried about normal wear and tear.

Mine is on my wrist almost daily, it works well as an all rounder but scratchers and swirls really are unavoidable.

I wear my 5712r daily. Rose gold is soft so i try and be mindfull of that.

Scratches are fine as long as you are the one who caused it : )

The first one is painful and sticks out like eyesore. Subsequent ones just make the watch look better.

What I find most undesirable are dents on the bezel.

it's a great daily watch, but if you're afraid that it will get scratches, then the best bet might be ceramic version from another brand. just my .02 cents

I wore mine as a daily for a long time. It will scratch more than most...or at least show the scratches more but the comfort will be second to none.

I agree, but some are more prone to scratching than others. The Nautilus is notorious for scratching (even just a shirt cuff will do it).

That said, the Nautilus looks amazing, even with battle scars :)
