Ultimately this is entirely up to you however a watch is only a material possession and therefore I think you should wear what you feel best represent yourself and your image I don't think of material possession has any feelings and therefore the memories that you shared will always be with you anyway whether you want the watch or not, that being said if you are feeling guilty even thinking about it you've sort of answered the question and you should keep the watch.

I would try not to. But there were times in my life if I had it I would have needed the money more. If it's a case where you need the dough then it is your choice. No one would judge you.

I didn't read through all the posts but was this watch something your father wore regularly? Or was it some retirement gift he got and never wore? I assuming you are younger like me and the two tone just doesn't fit your style. If it was your father watch he wore I would keep it and in future years your tastes will no doubt change. Soon you will cherish it every day it's on your wrist.

Noo! Keep it and buy a watch that you like for now, or don't. But don't sell the watch, you'll regret it

Honestly, you should kick yourself in the a$$ for even considering selling a gift of significance from your father.

Sorry but don't be an a$$, keep the watch even if you seldom wear it.

If it was from my father, I wouldn't sell it under any circumstances. Keep hold of it and save towards the other piece - you'll probably feel better!

My father gave me his 6264 Daytona several years ago. At the time i had no idea the value of it until i started researching the watch over a year ago.

For fear of being shunned, I auctioned it. I just couldn't see myself wearing it. I have a great appreciation for the Rolex brand (and the Daytona) from the research i did on this watch. My father received (or purchased) it new in the early 70s. He wore it for about 10 years then went to the cheapo casio/digitals with all the bells and whistles that the became popular in the 80s. I honestly dont think he knew how rare it was when he passed 6+ years ago. I didnt even know until several months ago. At the end of the day, I just couldn't wear a "luxury car" on the end of my arm day in and out; especially one that wasn't water proof, has an acrylic crystal and was a manual wind. It wasn't something he bequeathed to me on his death bed. In fact it really held no emotional value to him.

I put it up for auction so someone who could appreciate more than I. I instead rolled over some of the proceeds to purchase a BLNR and GMT COKE. The remainder which will help fund improvements to a cottage my family has in Michigan. A place he loved be.

So unless the watch meant alot to him and gave him pleasure knowing you would have it to remember him, then no, I wouldn't sell it. My dad wasnt a "watch guy" and I knew he would never wear a watch of that value. He'd sake his head at the thought. Every time I look at my Rolex, I think of my Dad and his watch.

Soooo...
The hammer price was $45,000 (add 20% buyers fee)

If my father had gifted me a luxury watch, I would cherish it (even if it were the ugliest watch I had ever seen).

Like the wonderful Patek ad said, or words to this affect, you don't own the watch, you are simply the caretaker for the next generation of your father's family.

Would never sell.

Are there any other TRF members who haven't answered yet? Really, come on....please post. It doesn't matter that the OP already said thanks for the replies, he's decided to keep the watch. No matter. Go ahead and keep answering his question until there are no members left to do so...or the internet runs out of pages, or something like that. Please...

never. like you said, the value might not increase in 30 years, but in 30 years when you look at that watch that feeling is priceless.

if you don't like it much, then just wear it on certain events. you might like it in a few years. but again I would never sell it.

just my 2 cents...

unequivocally no. i received a day date 118139 (blue dial & croc strap) from my parents for my wedding recently. i hold such a strong emotional attachment to it & i treasure this the most in comparison to other timepieces i own.
the watch reminds me so much of my parents & my special day. :)

No way would I sell that. And I don't care about appreciation on a watch like that. It's not an investment it's a memory of your dad at some point.

I wouldn't sell it. It's a nice classic watch, keep it and use it for special occasions.
