The second soldier from the right is holding his rifle rather sloppily in the present arms position, should be parallel with his body.

That reminds me of something I was wondering when I saw this on TV - does anybody know why the two footmen in the carriage have different colored braid on their jackets? It's a brighter color for the guy on the left.

Well now that you mention it, it's interesting to me that those soldiers carried modern rifles and not some kind of ceremonial ones. Obviously there would have to be real security present (like the police behind the soldiers on the left), but the combination of those solders' ceremonial uniforms with modern weapons is interesting.

Yes, the weapons used are always real, it was quite interesting changing from the previous rifle (FN SLR) to the current model (SA80) the earlier rifle was longer and easier to drill with, it could also be rested on the ground at the "at ease" position, a cover is put over the sight to stop it catching on their tunics, a black cover is also attached covering the green stock..

As for my previous post.

In his defence, he will have been stood for quite a while, it will have been one of the first movements he made so his arms and fingers will have become numb.

You'd expect better from the Grenadiers! I hope "the Badge" doesn't see this and tear him a new one!

Apparently the unseated rider was marched away in quick time.

I don't know the answer, but it could be some thing as simple as it being a newer jacket.

So are the soldiers shown in the ceremonial uniforms regular military? Are they chosen for that duty? How does it work?

Bill, the Guards are infantry soldiers first, the household cavalry are Recce regiments, they all do operational tours of Afghanistan etc like the rest of the army, they take it in turns to be posted to London on ceremonial duties, the guards regiments are very proud(and justifiably so) of their fighting history.

What he said.

Is like the US Marines who form the Honour Guard for the President.
