I have this same camera setup, it is called a Gigapan and is a pretty cool piece of equipment. You mount a camera to the robotic base, mount the whole thing on a tripos and set the X and Y axis(s) and then it goes through and takes from a few to several hundred digital images and then you stitch them all together using the Gigapan software that runs on multiple servers and it publishes the final image. There was a very cool one of Obama's innauguration as well. I have done a few of NASCAR races and even some crime scenes.

Great technology developed by NASA and Carnegie Mellon.
