They used a device called Gigapan.
These gadgets take hundreds of photos using a computer driven robotic mechanism. It makes taking panoramas a piece of cake. I'm quite surprised we don't see "ghosts" in these images as invariably people move between takes and they have to be "stitched" to make the big one. A similar one for Obama's inauguration - I'm sure this was shown here before. http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=15374 A cheaper version costing approx $900. http://www.gigapansystems.com/ |

I have this same camera setup, it is called a Gigapan and is a pretty cool piece of equipment. You mount a camera to the robotic base, mount the whole thing on a tripos and set the X and Y axis(s) and then it goes through and takes from a few to several hundred digital images and then you stitch them all together using the Gigapan software that runs on multiple servers and it publishes the final image. There was a very cool one of Obama's innauguration as well. I have done a few of NASCAR races and even some crime scenes.
Great technology developed by NASA and Carnegie Mellon.

Love all the professional photoshoppers here on the forum, I too was a victim of photoshopping here recently.

I just came across another photo with the same GigaPan technology. Maybe we'll start seeing more and more of these.
