After spending four years in residency (before the Feds limited resident work hours to 80 hour a week) and working 100 to 120 hours a week, I decided I'd never push myself like that again. My personal "record" was 128 hours in seven days. I was miserable. I think the training brainwashes surgeons and others into thinking that work is priority one.

I think you're right. So you started out in a surgery residency?

Those kinds of hours (cheap labor) are so unnecessary... and you know, the 80 hour workweek was a joke - never enforced - when my husband was in training... Can you imagine if patients found out that people making decisions about their care had been pretty much without sleep and working for 30 hours straight....

I work in surgery as well, though I am an independent practitioner working in plastic surgery I work typically 7:00a - 6:00p M-F, no weekends or call. And my TTDJ can be found on my wrist any time I am not scrubbed ;)

I sell IT infrastructure hardware and software. I work mostly from home, venturing out to meet with clients, vendors and occasionally stop in to one of my company's 2 offices locally. Some weeks, I may put in 40 hours or thereabouts. Most weeks, it's substantially less.

I'm blessed to have had a pretty solid client base for quite some time now, plus I have an inside rep that handles the minutiae of quoting, order tracking and fulfillment.

I'm also an anesthesiologist, but I only work about 50 hrs/wk. I could change jobs, work harder, and make more, but why? I'm with JoeyC. There's plenty of time to make a few extra duckets later if needed, but only one chance to spend quality time with the family!

I work in a warehouse. Good workout, great pay (for a 22 year old), and I have a lot of spare time to do homework. I work 40 hours, but would do 50-60 in a heartbeat if the company allowed me. I am a total work-aholic, I envy all of you with big salaries and an even bigger number of hours worked

I'm chief administrative officer for a healthcare company. Since it's a 24/7/365 operation, the hours I work vary -- usually, though, about 45 - 60 hours per week. I sometimes I go in on weekends to take care of details when things are less demanding.

Assuming you work with a group, do you feel pressure to take on more work than you want, or is it pretty easy to have your hours scheduled as you like them? With some groups, it seems like saying "no" to long hours gives you a bad reputation. Around here, there's a lot of PR in anesthesia (making surgeons' groups and hospitals happy by doing lots of cases), and competition for contracts with various surgery/treatment centers... not a good environment for anyone who wants a personal life.

It's an academic practice, though not really a traditional one, but it's modeled as a lifestyle job. As services expand, we hire someone else. We're efficient, so the pay is fair. When I think about leaving for more $$, I think about missing dinner 5 nights a week and smile. We can cut back further to 80% 75% 50% time or no call, but that requires appropriate planning, and a pay cut.

I'm in media sales and I've always believed that time is more valuable than anything else. I work smart so I don't have to work long hours. Typically I work 30 hours a week with a lot of flexibility around my family (priority number one). It's always been that way since day one and I'm guessing it won't change. Yeah me!

Very nice setup - one that will leave you with no regrets down the road.

I work in IT - typical week is about 45 hours - sometime less sometimes more. I am on call 24/7 and it has been that way for the past 15 years.

Worst I have ever done was 4 straight days on a job site when lost a server rack and portions of the network.

I pick up work on the side as I see fit and have fun doing it

I am a Dentist
I work 4 days a week...about 30-32 hours a week
I did Architectural Manufacturing for 8 years when I took a break and that was 40-45 hours a week but the pay was a lot better. I had 100 employees and all the sweat was distributed!
