Rolex and Patek

Im sorry if this offends any Patek fans out there but I just had to say it. Have been looking for a new watch and last weekend I settled on a Rolex. Im not going to use the word ugly but am I the only one out there that doesn't favour the designs of a Patek? I tried the Nautilus and it did absolutely nothing for me. The Rolex just felt like a more solidly built watch not to mention way prettier than most Patek's could ever be. Im sorry but with all due respect to Patek's marketing department, I just don't buy into the hype that surrounds them.

Bought the Day Date II. Fell in love the minute I put it on my wrist. Delivery at the end of August!

New to TRF and picking a fight! That is the nature of the hobby we all like different things. Welcome to TRF from a Rolex and Patek owner. You have made a good choice by the way

Congrats on the DD2! Looking forwards to pics.

Hmmm, some people would say that Rolex marketing creates a bit of excessive hype as well. Objectively, Rolex movements aren't as well finished as those by Patek and other manufacturers, but price points and target markets are different. For example, Rolex doesn't make repeaters, tourbillons, perpetual calendars, etc.

Some Patek designs don't appeal to me, but some do--beauty is subjective.

I think among the various watch brands, Rolex and Patek are similar in perhaps having the most loyal and vocal proponents.

Patek has made many amazing watches in the past, but I don't like their current designs much. The worst part is their marketing that make me sick.

There are a number of Pateks I'd love to have and a few Rolex's I don't care for. The same be said for any brand.

Congrats on your new watch.

You're not alone about Patek. I can't say if the hype is justified or not, I have no experience, but design-wise they simply don't speak to me.
I mean, you can't go wrong with a Calatrava, but you will find a similar design by most manufacturers anyway.

When I look outside the functional beauty of Rolex I prefer a Lange 1 or a nice Reverso.

For a proper dress watch the Calatrava is in my option miles and miles ahead of the Cellini. Once you start looking at a daily wear it becomes a bit harder to choose. I have always been a Rolex guy but I do like the nautilus and am considering that or an AP RO at the moment. The finishing of the case, bracelet, movement is unparalleled on Patek. However they don't have the same every day practicality as a Rolex. I dare say that a lot of Patek owners will also have a Rolex or similar as a more daily piece.

For a proper Dress Watch the Cellini range is, in my opinion, miles ahead of the Patek.
Whilst a Patek may be a higher quality product they just don't have the style or appearance of the comparable Rolex Model.
I have to like the look of a watch (or anything else for that matter) and Rolex wins the styling contest every time. I would buy a VC before a Patek.
I would never consider a Patek because I would always find a Rolex Model I liked better.

What is wrong with their marketing? Out of curiosity.

Also OP, everyone has his own taste.
I think the Nautilus design is one of the most beautiful designs that exists.
You think it's ugly.
I think YG isn't as nice as WG, others pick YG any day.
That is the nature of this hobby.

Congrats on the DDII, a fine watch. For me Rolex excel with sports watches, Patek with more complicated dressier pieces.

Patek's are beautiful well made watches but I am with you, tried them on many times but they just don't sing to me like a Rolex. With that being said they are not comparing apples to apples.

I agree thomas. Rolex enjoys more hype than patek IMHO. That said, my two favorite brands, until lange builds a sports watch on bracelet or rubber (dreaming).
