Bought these shoes from Russell & Bromley, London a couple of years ago. R & B sell I suppose a mid range shoe, not quite say Crockett & Jones but good and very comfortable to wear.

Visiting their website, I saw as many bottles of booze as shoes!

Do they custom order Aldens with a crepe non-skid sole?

Great NST's. I've never had any success buying shoes from Leather Soul.

I've never heard of them doing that, but they do order runs of discrete styles of shoes with that option included for the entire run.

To tell you the truth, I ordered three pairs at around the same time with crepe soles - these guys, a pair of reverse tobacco chamois Indys from J. Gilbert, and a pair of ravello LWBs.

I got rid of the ravello longwings, nearly immediately...the crepe sole makes the shoes rather heavy, in my view, and they're slippery in the snow. Seemed impractical for a longwing I intended to wear to work. Plus, the crepe sole wears out fast, and the leather piece at the toe starts peeling away if you wear them in bad weather.

When the two boots I have left with crepe wear out, I'm sending them to B. Nelson in NYC to be resoled with leather/commando soles. Alden will only resole with the option the shoe was originally sold with these days, apparently.

I've heard they are great. Every time I call on a shoe they kind of say they aren't an online retailer and they prefer to sell local

Leather Soul said that? That's strange. Every retailer that I am aware of has no issues shipping shoes across the country or world for that matter.

I'm kind of surprised by that as well. I haven't bought from them in a few years, but I always had great experiences with them. I know they opened up a bar as well, and perhaps between those efforts and unrelenting internet demand on shoes, it got to be a lot.

It's been awhile since I've called them. Perhaps I caught them on a bad day. I will keep an eye on their website and trying calling again when they have something I am interested in.

This certainly wasn't the case when I ordered my two Pairs of St Cristina a few years back. Something must have drastically changed if that's the case now.

Not as exotic as some of the wonderful boots on display here but nevertheless, very comfortable, these were my first pair of Church's (Ryder). They also look quite nice with different coloured laces, red and bright green suit them very well.

Great looking shine Dave.

Me too, and it all started with cotton balls, the t-shirts, and finally old style cotton diapers. For me I found old style cotton diapers to be cheap and work the best.

I can remember being show how to burn polish. Personally I found that to be a dangerous practice and completely unnecessary.

Church's Ryder suede boots...thumbs up or thumbs down? Overpriced vs. quality? I am interested in the dark brown.

These two brands are actual shoemakers and they make their shoes where as Gucci is a label and if they offer loafers someone else actually makes their shoes for them.
I wasn't very clear when I said "comparable." I was referring to the look. In person, it was a very sharp looking shoe.

You did say that you weren't sure how they stacked up against other brands. I was just trying to give you my take based on what my understanding is. But I would have to be honest that I don't own any Gucci shoes but I do own a good number from brands both which cost less and many which cost more. Consensus generally tends to be that fashion brands such as Gucci who tend not to make their own shoes generally charge more for the name and not as much for the actual product. So if you were to buy a shoe from the company that actually made these at the same specifications but minus the Gucci name I'm certain they would cost much less. Does that mean they will explode after the third wear absolutely not, however I think you could probably do better if you purchased directly from an actual shoemaker.

Regardless, if you like them and your happy well there you go.

A big thumbs up from me, I have some, I did get them in a sale though which made them even more exceptional value. They will last a lifetime.

Edit: I did miss the suede on first reading and posted a photo of my leather Ryder boots. Now corrected.

Not Dark Brown but made the same.

Speaking of Gucci shoes, I believe that they have (or had at one point) a line of proper Goodyear welted shoes, but they are pretty expensive ($1000 range). Once you're in the $1000 range, your options open up to some serious shoemakers. I agree with Dan that with fashion houses, a big portion of what you're paying for is the name.

Nice shine!

I've found that it's pretty easy to get a nice shine with Saphir Pate de Luxe. A couple layers of wax followed by a wipe down with a lightly misted rag (after each layer of wax) will bring out a mirror shine in no time.
