Would I technically be trading down?

I have a datejust that is older maybe 70-80's, i was looking to trade it to my local shop I have been going to and buying everything through up to a sub but then I saw the explorer which is apparently less at retail than a datejust and is about the same price as an older sub maybe a little cheaper. Tldr; is it a downgrade to trade my old date just for a newer explorer or should I go with an older sub?

There is no hierarchy here, there is only what makes you happy. Thinking in terms of trading up or down totally negates the joy of the trade.

Yeah it's just I like both equally and future goal is to try to keep the value to trade up again to a new sub

I actually traded an M serial DJ w/WG fluted bezel, plus $200, for an M serial 114270. It was at a jewelry store, so I knew I was getting dinged on the trade value of my DJ, but at the time I had no experience selling watches online and I really wanted the Explorer so I did the trade. Not the best financial move...and I knew that at the time....but I simply liked the Explorer better than the DJ. I didn't view it as trading down. Just getting the watch I really wanted.....and I didn't regret it. That story should make you feel a little better!

If money is tight I'd just keep saving until you can trade for a new sub.

This....

But also begs the question, why are you trading? Looks of the new one? Condition? Service?

I would consider an older sub but more information would help? What does the DJ look like and what does the sub look like? Is it a complete set?

This.

You're likely to loose a little $ in every trade. It would be cheaper overall to wear and enjoy your current DJ and trade it in along with cash when you've got it to get the sub that you want.

Yep! I would not ever recommend settling on any watch purchase. Save until you can buy what you like.

Dident realize I had more replies sorry, but I like the look of the sub/explorer better. The size of the face of the DJ is also 36 or whatever so I'd like one a bit larger. I wouldn't care about losing the money in each trade because I'd prefer either of those two before trading up for the new sub. Here is a picture of the current DJ I have.
