Tell me about oblique medium nibs

I received an Omas Milord Vision in blue today. I got a fair deal on the pen and was lucky enough to win the auction a few days ago. This particular pen has a factory Omas oblique medium nib. I saw this in the auction and did some research before bidding. It seemed like a benign nib modification but I don't really get it. Writing with the pen without it being slightly rotated gives a pretty scratchy experience as I expected. With a little rotation it writes like a regular medium. Is the nib meant to be used without rotating the pen and giving some scratchiness and a thinner line on some strokes? There really doesn't seem to be much variation this way. This is the first nib modification of this type in my collection so it's new to me. Stubs, medium, broad, fine.......yes. Oblique, new to me!

Oblique nibs were meant to help compensate for users who held the pen at an unusual angle. They can be right footed or left footed (take your shoes off and look down) and there were various choices of how much slant there was.

I find it usually takes my about a line to get used to a new oblique nib but from then on they are as smooth as any other pen.

NOW... of course it is not all that simple. An oblique nib can also be somewhat rounded or flat, with the rounded versions more forgiving than the flat ones and the flat ones providing more line variation than the rounded ones.

Thanks Jim! I looked at the nib under magnification this morning and found the right tine to be a little high. I'm guessing a lot of the scratchiness was coming from this issue. I adjusted it down but it looks like the nib/feed need to be heat set now. I'll do this tonight hopefully and re align the tines tomorrow. Not the first Omas nib on a new pen I've had to work on I'm thinking I might modify this nib to a stub.

After further inspection under magnification, I've found a crack on the top of the body by the piston filler. Looks like this one is going back to the seller

Unfortunately that looks like a fatal flaw and long term problem. Yes, send it back.
