Extraordinary instagram account - how does he do it?

I'm sure a lot of you have already seen @rolexdiver's instagram feed with superb pictures of his Rolex collection. But have you noticed that the watches are always set to "Rolex time" 10:10:31?

I'm puzzled at how it's possible to stop a watch at exactly this time...? How does he do it?

Easy. Set the time to 10:10, wait for the second hand to get around to 28 seconds, then snap the shutter... They look well lit enough that the shutter speed won't cause a blur of the second hand hence it looks "stopped." Mystery solved.

Hack the movement, let it wind down.

Once its wound down, how do you get the seconds hand to exactly 31?

I happen to be wearing an SKX right now but give me 5 minutes and I'll prove it to you. You don't need to stop the movement. Be right back...

Jason, I'm familiar with this technique. But if you check out @rolexdiver's current instagram story, then he shows that the movement is not running...

That's one way, but I'm pretty sure he don't do it like that. Is almost impossible to do it with three watches at the same time and all of them in the same exact position. Imagine missing the shot and then having to set the time again in all three ? i don't think so.

I wondered this as well. Single watch shots I can figure out, but there was a photo of all the watches in his collection (including non Rolex) in the box and they were all at 10:10:31...now that I couldn't figure out.

I'd be willing to bet that's how he does it. Hack the watches, set them to the exact same time. Might need to do a do it in a couple of steps since it's hard to push 3 crowns in at the same time without help. In that case set the first one to 10:08, wait a minute for the second one which is set to 10:09 then push that one's crown, push the third one's crown at 10:10, then wait 31 seconds and they are all in sync. Sounds like a challenge - I'll give it a shot when I get home later this afternoon.

You know that he can shoot all three watches separately - and in three different images - and use layers to merge the exact position for all into one single image. :) He's using a tripod and flash / light, so he only needs three shots to get the exact time for each watch. And if you are really OCD'd getting the hands in the exact spot - you could fire multiple triggers around 10:10:30 - 10:10:32, to get 10:10:31.

But he's not doing that. Look at the "all in the palm of your hand" shot...

The cool part is that; look at the Daytona 116500. The seconds sundial is also 31, while the chronograph hand is in the official Rolex position.

The trick is this:

Let the watches run down. Shake them gentle. Let the time run and hack it at 10:10:31. Push the crown back in. The PR is so low, the watch will not run.

Now you have total control - even in bad lighting - and no need for using PS. :)

It's an interesting question - how DOES he do it?

I never noticed the watches were set to Rolex time but I did notice they always have the date of whatever day it is. Always.

I also noticed they are pristine, not a scratch, not a swirl, not a ding.

Can you see it?

He sets up the special lights, pulls out his professional camera, hacks the date and time, wipes down the watches and captures the photo. Uploads to IG and then puts the watches back in the safe.

My "how does he do it" question would be how a guy about 30 years old have such an amazing collection of modern & vintage Rolex watches.

I asked him if he was a diver since his name was rolex diver but it turns out he flies radio controlled helicopters for a living. Who knew?

I only have 7. I must be doing something wrong. Seriously. And at 30 I had 1 LOL.

Shout out to that guy! Although if you really want to see someone with a super sick instagram account - www.instagram.com/thehighlander65 is perhaps the winner. He has EVERY modern Rolex and no doubles. If you go back far enough he also had some SUPER SICK AP ROO's that he's not putting in photos. I'd like to know the evolution of that watch collection without seeming like a creepster. I'm sure it's an interesting story.

You can hack all three to the exact time you want then leave the watch until it winds down, and then screw in the crown and take pics at your leisure.

The impressive part is not "how he does it" - but really "where does he get the stamina" to do this thousands of times. :)

When pulling out the crown, the seconds hand will stop moving. If the crown is left unchanged at this position, pulled out, will the movement keep unwinding until the power reserve is used?

No it's not, but if you're a watch collector and a photographer it's not necessarily that simple if you regularly wear your watches.

Yes There are only a couple explanations but none the less still impressive! Alan takes some great shots and has an amazing collection. Def worth following on IG.

I must be stupid, can't his shutter speed allow him to snap it at 10 10 31 in motion. Just a matter of setting the time if so.

Not saying it isn't awesome and appreciate his contribution and collection.

I don't have instagram fwiw.
