Paris - Take the Rolex??

Wife and I are headed to Paris this summer. Can I safely wear my YG Blue Dial Sub or do I leave it in the safe deposit box?

Also, are there any good places to look at watches in Paris?

Just be aware of your surroundings and exercise common sense. The main attractions in Paris are (for the most part) in portions of the city that you'll be fine in. Like any major metropolitan area there are parts that you would be advised to likely avoid. Basically just exercise some conservative judgment and you'll be fine. If you were going to a 3rd world capital it would be a little different story - but Paris you shouldn't have any problems.

I wore mine to Oktoberfest in Munich and to Prague last Fall. NO worries or problems whatsoever.

We wore ours to Paris a few months ago. Lots of nice watches all over Paris.

You're fine in Paris as long as you are aware of your surroundings. Use common sense (ie. don't walk into a dark, isolated alley) and you'll be ok with wearing any watch.

Agree.

Anytime you are in a big city, staying aware of your environment, is always prudent. I have traveled extensively in the US and am always surprised at how few people stay aware of how is coming up behind them, doors opening, etc. not too long ago in Washington DC a fight broke out across the street from where I was walking. I briskly moved away but there were people that stopped to watch. I always worry what happenes when an altercation like this escalates.

I live in Paris, of course no problem .... like everyone else use common sense....
There is a few used watch store but very expensive....
And a lot of nice stores for new watches, like bucherer or Place Vendôme.

I never get questions like this. I am traveling Europe and wearing my Rolex everywhere. Even went to Dubai, Djibouti, and Kenya and wore it there too. No problems.

Do Europeans ask themselves “Should I wear my Rolex to the U.S.?”

When I traveled to China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Vietnam for my old job I wore my watches, albeit at that time I did not have a Rolex but frequently wore my IWC and Panerai. I now consistently travel to Ireland, Denmark, and Sweden with my BLNR. In either case whether past or present I was in major cities as well as small towns, etc. Never felt unsafe.

Be aware of your surroundings. If you end up clanging it against the Eiffel Tower as you're walking by and put a big 'ole dent in it, you'll know it wasn't safe.

Paris is lovely, however Gard du nord railway station is not somewhere I felt was “safe”. However that’s just my opinion based on my own situational awareness , my advice is to keep your watch out of sight until you feel comfortable. I had a great time in Paris and I’m sure you will too, it’s an amazing place, enjoy!

I think your wife won’t be more comfortable just because you asked us. That’s the flip side of your question methinks.

Had post #1 contained the info in post #5, perhaps more folks would have said: Happy Wife, Happy Life!

Here’s the thing IMHO, you’re going on a great vacation this Summer to Paris. She may not be as worried about your Rolex as overall physical safety in case of a mugging. And it is the Rolex that she believes could be a source of targeting both of you for an incident.

How will our input assuage that thought lurking in the back of her mind? And, God forbid, something does happen?

For my part, I wouldn’t be concerned about wearing a Rolex to Paris.

However, if the question was, “How do I convince my wife that it’s safe to wear my Rolex to Paris?”, I’d say the worries would be lurking in the back of her mind the whole trip.

Personally I wouldn't bring my Rolex in Paris... I was there in June 2016 and on two occasions we had "security problems".

1st time my friend's rental car got swarmed by gypsies and he had to give them money to make them go away. Can you imagine if they had spotted a rolex?

Second time we were at Montmartre and some dodgy guys tried to wrap bracelets around my buddy's wrist and then make him pay for them. Can you again imagine if they had spotted a Rolex on his wrist?

I'm not trying to scare you by posting these two stories but imho leave the Rolex home and enjoy the wine!

I would wear mine, lots of nice restaurants to dine at so a must, but there are a lot of pickpockets as with most Cities, so keep to public places and avoid short cuts in dark alleys etc all the usual common sense precautions.

I don’t do the church thing, so I have no idea how safe they are, haha

My fellow Americans crack me up in general. They think western Europe is some sort of alien planet that requires a spaceship to travel there. And once they get there it’ll be some sort of strange experience where everyone walks on their hands.

I once had a world friend ask me if they have toilets in Italy.

When I went to Paris for the first time, I took the train from CDG to this station at about 11pm at night with my luggage, looking for my AirBnb. When I got lost and called the owner, she immediately told me to leave and get out of that area.

What’s interesting is can you think of any other brand that would make you ask yourself this question?

Personally, I’d take it and exercise common sense and avoid flashing the thing about with short sleeves.

Well, to be fair, unchecked immigration from some less stable geographies and cultures has changed the dynamics of many European cities over the last couple decades. Some places just aren't the same as they used to be, and that includes safety and security considerations.

I’m in Europe often, Croatia, Italy, Greece, France, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden in the past couple years, no issues at all.
