Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph or Rolex Sky Dweller?
I'm fortunate to have an opportunity to obtain either a VC overseas chronograph in blue or Rolex Sky Dweller in black, both stainless steel version. Cost is very close, except that the Overseas chronograph is a mint used one vs the Rolex is brand new. I like both for different reasons but can't have both of them at the same time. The VC is the 5500v current gen which brand new MSRP is at $30k
What would you pick? And why? |

I would go for the Skydweller for sure. Much cooler complication IMO and I have personally never been a huge fan of the Overseas Chrono

Wouldn’t new vc dual time OS be the better matchup?

I was considering both these watches as well. Went to try on the VC chrono yesterday and I left unimpressed. I like the fact that the new overseas line comes equipped with an quick strap change mechanism plus 3 straps. However, I didn't like how the watch looked IRL and it was too thick/bulky for my 6.5" wrist. I am dropping by Rolex to try on the Sky-Dweller today. Hope they have one in stock.

I've tried neither on wrist, so take my opinion with a pinch of salt, but from everything I've read about both, I would much prefer the VC Overseas, presuming you can live with the case thickness and admittedly less-than-ideal date placement at 4.30.
Especially given that someone else has already taken the initial new depreciation hit for you. Finished in a finer, dressier manner, it's a design unique to VC, with Geneva Seal, solid-gold rotor and a gorgeous movement observable via display case back, yet it's decently anti-magnetic, has a lumed dial and 150m water resistance. Add in the included (all quick-release) micro-adjust bracelet, rubber & leather strap options, and it's a watch of real versatility, blending both finesse & sports ability. The SkyDweller is a terrific watch, and with a novel execution of its complications, but compared to the VC it's not quite as exciting or different, in my opinion. Of course, both watches fulfill different roles, which is another factor. |

I would go with VC, they are not the same tier of watch manufacturing.
Not that Sky Dweller is common, but VC (the brand) is less common and I like that.

Love both. The white date window (and its position) on the VC would probably push me to pick to sky dweller.
I think the date window looks better on the black/white dial overseas chrono vs the blue dial.

This! VC is on another level, but also has its disadvantages (resale and probably more delicate). I own an Overseas and the finishing of both, case and movement is stunning.

They only had the TT white dial but it was enough to get an overall feel for the watch. Personally, I thought it felt much better on the wrist than the overseas Chrono. If it were me, I would choose the Sky Dweller over the Overseas for appearance, fit, reliability and value retention. I strongly suggest that you try then both on. Good luck! seriously
I wouldn't make the decision solely based on that though, but the VC is on a different level, especially the finishing. Value retention is a different story.
