My first!

Thanks to all the great contributors of this forum.

I'd like to share my story, which I'm sure is similar to many but my way to introduce myself. I first got turned on to watches by one of my roommates in grad school who somehow had already amassed an impressive collection including 3 rolexes and other pieces including panerai, omega and cartier. I can't remember how many of the other pieces he had because rolex always stood out to me. I knew it was not my time then, but that one day the time would come that I would own a rolex.

Fast forward some ten years, and I have started and begun to establish myself in my career and this summer will be getting married. I have the most wonderful fiancee and was encouraged to look into a watch to commemorate the day. I thought about it for a while, and for some reason a couple weeks ago the fire was ignited!

At this point, for me when I think of rolex, the first thing that comes to mind is how timeless it is. I can't believe the genius of the designers, how many things last 50+ years and still relatively look the same but remain at the top of the game? In that light, it had to be the sub date for me.

I tried on some panerai and some omega, but to my surprise (I had not been checking these forums for some time) I could not find a SS SubC anywhere. I called 10 ADs with no luck and to be honest got the cold shoulder from many of them. I was able to go into a few ADs, and was given no guarantee that the piece would arrive before the wedding or that I would even be able to purchase one as they all had wait lists.

About a week ago after work, on a whim I called one AD here in SoCal. Expecting to get laughed off the phone again after asking whether they had any in stock, there was a pause, and the voice on the other line said "actually we do have one." For the first time in a while I was temporarily speechless. I think I yelled at him "I WANT IT!" Thirty minutes later, in my work attire, I was in the back room purchasing my first rolex.

I had a great experience at my AD. The watch was sized to fit me perfectly, polished, all stickers removed and at my request they shipped it to my friend out of state to save me the tax. It was surreal and I was so appreciative. They offered me champagne but I passed given that I almost felt like they were doing me a favor and I had to drive home!

The watch is now out of state, and my friend is watching it safely. I have thought about asking him to ship it to me, but we are going to stick to the original plan - he is going to bring it to my bachelor party (a month away!).

As much as I'd love to be wearing it as I type my first post, I am going to wait. I've already waited years for it, and perhaps it will be a second burst of excitement when I see it again, the kind of fireworks we can only have with our first rolex.

I'd like to thank all the forum members here for their informative and often times hilarious posts. I had tried another forum for help finding a watch and essentially got ridiculed. Very much looking forward to becoming a part of this community!!!

Wow, that was way longer than I thought it would be.

Can’t wait to see that color combo!
I haven’t decided what I’m wearing yet... maybe I should try to score a BLNR and color coordinate from there too

To those of you who who advised me to be careful with my first new watch in Vegas - thank you. I actually did get it insured before the trip, and I didn't wear it out to the shenanigans that I participated in...

Unfortunately, I somehow lost the pillow for it. I called the local RSC and they said they cannot replace it. Does anyone have an idea where I might be able to purchase one? I checked ebay without any success as well as the classifieds here...

Have you tried asking the AD you purchased the watch from? They might be able to give you one.

Anyway, hadn't seen this thread before. Congrats on the Sub! Hope the bachelor party was a good one!

Congratulations on the up coming wedding. Sounds like the bachelor's party should be fun with the new watch coming in!!! I hope you post a picture or two when you get it. Sorry to hear about the ridicule from another forum. That's never enjoyable. Good luck with the upcoming wedding!!!

Congratulations!! And I loved the story. I think that is one of my favorite parts about joining the ranks of fellow Rolex owners - it is the stories.
