Bottoms up! The real reason well-educated people spend 9x more on booze
People with a graduate degree spend an average of nearly $1,000 a year on booze, compared to only about $100 for those with less than a high school degree.
What these groups drink differs significantly too. “College graduates who drink alcohol show a clearer preference for wine vs. beer, 44% to 35%, respectively. Among non-college graduates — particularly those with a high school education or less — beer is the preferred drink,” Gallup revealed. I was a college dropout. Don't really fancy wine. Love all European beer including German which I feel is the best. Love high end single malt Scotch, good Rum and occasionally Bourbon. These pair well with fine cigars which is also another hobby I love.

67 year old university graduate here.....I prefer beer as a solo drink, preferably Sierra Nevada or Russian River, I only drink wine with food......oh yeah they forgot cocktails........also my preferred solo drinks....gin martinis, old fashioned with rye whiskey, gin & tonic.
PS beer goes especially well with what I like to smoke.

Isn't it just because the former group has $1,000 disposable income for booze, while the latter has only $100? |

A thousand bucks a year? You guys across the pond must have very cheap booze.
Or delicate constitutions

I find the numbers way off.
I think educated people or at least people that consider themselves a bit of a connoisseur spend way more on wine and perhaps scotch that 1000 bucks a year and I have a hard time believing joe 6 pack spends only 100 bucks a year, more like 1000. |

College graduate here. Drank enough beer there to drown a fish.
To this day, I'm not a fan. It's like soda to me, bloating and burpy. The only time I drink it is if there's nothing else available or I'm eating pizza. I had a Heineken in the hot weather on Saturday at a birthday party BBQ. After a few minutes it was warm and I lost interest. I drink vodka, vodka, and vodka. I like to make my own gimlets - fresh lime and a pinch of powdered sugar. I bring my vodka and Roses Lime Juice to BYOB restaurants and pour it on the sneak. I know a lot of places don't like you bringing liquor. I ask for a wine glass packed with ice and make a gimlet goblet I'm a big red wine drinker but with food.

its beer all the way for me, guinness and newcastle brown ale, since i was young,
i dont trust men that drink wine in a pub instead of beer, leave that for the ladies, Ł100 a fortnight is common for some people on beer, even weekly. |

One of my elders told me to drink the most expensive liquors you can afford. He says the quality is better and therefore better for you. I don't agree with the 1,000 figure, I think it is more.

There’s a great Jim Jeffries joke about people who don’t drink. They always say the same thing “I don’t like the taste of it”
NOBODY DOES!!!We don’t drink because we want to, we do it because we FN have to! All jokes aside a thousand dollars lol I spent that on booze in high school per year. I have a graduate degree and prefer beer. Really good beer preferably or cheap shitty beer. No middling crap lol

College grad here. Good beer over great wine for me every time.
The numbers do seem off, though. That said, I live on a tiny island and everyone here seems to try living the Jimmy Buffet lifestyle over the Warren Buffet one! |

For those questioning the numbers, I can't confirm the veracity of the statistics but I imaging they are skewed by the number of people who are teetotal or drink very rarely, since the poll reports an average spend. According to the Office for National Statistics, 43% of the UK population did not drink alcohol in 2016. I wouldn't be surprised in the number in the US is higher than that.

So the figures for the average graduate’s yearly alcohol purchases include the tea total graduates who don’t buy any at all?
Lies, damned lies and statistics.

I allocate $1,000 a year on booze. Right now I’m into the year 2059.
