Not safe in Ibiza

Well, maybe for a Rolex, not for this watch:

Europe is not what it used to be. I travel a lot, and honestly ? Nothing is as safe as US.
We are boarding on vacation , three cities ( Paris, Barcelona and Lisbon). Considering seriously about taking only the Garmin to the trip. Wife and kids will attract attention for the pickpockets. Showing jewelry adds more spice to this.
Refugees, local unemployed persons...they will go for watches, cellphones, wallets, anything.

When I go on vacation with family ( I have small kids) I wear gshock for the ease of mind. You will have enough time spent in running at kids wandering around and messing up to notice your surrounding. Who need a nice watch in any case during holidays with kids?

Yeah, he doesn't know what he's talking about. I'm American and have traveled widely and often. America is just as dangerous as any place in Europe. People are the same everywhere you go. For good and for bad. The US is certainly safer than Brazil though if that's all he's using as a reference.

This sounds more like a young self-made social media instagramer who was working really hard for his next YouTube video when suddenly ran into a low life thief.

... in realty...

It’s a spoiled 22 year old with his buddy probably flashing the watch around and/or has zero clue about his surroundings. While no one deserves this, it teaches the lesson that no matter where you are foreign or not stuff like this can prevented with a bit of common sense. Guarantee the kid wasn’t doing any of that.

Mine was sarcastic irony though - to highlight the ludicrous statement above.
You have made the only straight, unsarcastic and sensible comment in the thread.

Every country has good and bad areas.

Keep it civil guys. No need to make blanket statements about country safety.

Exactly. How hard is it to just pay attention to your surroundings when you’re out and about; no matter where you are. Be it across the globe or your own back yard.

I think it’s because most of us remember when traveling to Europe was actually something we wanted to do. If I do travel abroad, it’s mostly Asia these days.

My wife wanted to go on a European adventure with her mom and aunt, and I honestly told her it’s not worth the time, money, and risk anymore and let’s just stay at home.

There are fun enough things to do in our own backyard without dealing with international headaches.

The media and the Internet have done a good job of making people feel unsafe outside of their own home. I don't think much has changed over the years though. Walking around in big cities covered with jewelry has always made you a target for thieves.

Exactly Eliot.

I’ve travelled extensively throughout most major and mid sized NorthAmerican cities and quite a few of the same in Europe. I’ve never given a single thought to wearing a Rolex.

If I’m that worried about getting jacked for a watch, I should be just as worried about my wife or kids.

we just have to use every instinct that god gave us, wherever and whenever, to reduce the chances of any crime, listen to your gut instincts,

if they have become dulled, then you need to reinvigorate them,

Dont rely on government and their agencies to protect you, their hands are tied and this means they cant and wont sort out the decline in western society.

p.s i would think america is safer than a lot of places.

Don't worry about Lisbon. I was in Paris last month felt safe all the time. People say Barcelona is a different story but I've never been that interested in the city so I don't care.

I got hit for my wallet in Barcelona in 2013, my dad got hit for his passport in London in 2018 and just last week in Hamburg for his cellphone (but he caught the guy fortunately). The pickpocket problem in Europe is crazy, but I refuse to let it deter me from the wonderful continent. As long as you protect your belongings properly (wear tighter jeans or put it in a messenger bag and keep it in front of you at all times) and stay aware, I think you'll be fine!

Basic situational awareness should keep one safe in the majority of cities. Of course, there are parts of every city it would be wise to avoid.

Having said that, I suspect social media/ instagram has helped promote the hot watches to such an extent that the thieves know exactly which models to go for.
