Trading up AP RO chrono for platinum Rolex Day Date

I asked the same thing in the Rolex forum, but wanted to get a rounded view from you guys too.

I own an AP Royal Oak 38mm SS chrono 26315. I do like it, but don’t love it as much as my 15500.

I have been dreaming about the ice blue platinum day date 40. Now that the SS AP secondary prices have gone through the roof, I’m thinking about trading up. I have an offer for a little over $50k for my AP.

I know they are very different watches, but wanted to get some thoughts from you veterans out there!

My wife, who isn’t a watch person, thinks it’s a bad idea, comparing this to trading a regular Hermes Birkin for an alligator Kwanpen.

Do you think it’s a good idea? Any thoughts on long term value of the two? Thanks!!

I would say yes... The DD40 in platinum (particularly the one with the ice blue dial) is considered one of the pinnacle watches of Rolex. The 38mm ROC on the other hand is generally an afterthought in the line-up and is often in the shadows of the 41mm 15500 or even the 41mm ROC 26331. You are also getting a really good offer for the ROC which would mean you can get the DD40 with money to spare? (assuming you are getting the DD40 from the AD). All in all, a good trade to pursue. I don't really like the ROC with its date position so I'm biased naturally against the ROC but if they release a new one with symmetrical date positioning and transparent case back then my thought will differ.

I much prefer the 26315 to any Rolex, and I’ve had too many! Always listen to your wife. To do otherwise always has bad consequences.

I understand your wife's analogy but I don't think Rolex is Kwanpen. In fact, were it not for the run on Rolex, I doubt there would be a premium above MSRP for AP. And the AP chronographs were, up until very recently, the dogs of AP. The Day Date is, admittedly, not the most popular model, since it isn't a sports watch, but it is a superbly made and timeless design.
That being said, fsprow is correct, don't cross your wife.

I would preferred Plat. Day-Date over ROC 26315ST but I would preferred ROC Rose Gold 26315OR with full bracelet over Plat. Day-Date.

Curious... why do you not like 26315 as much as 15500?

I second fsprow's comment. Wives/partners are almost always right

I’d keep the 26315. The rose gold RO bracelet is in a class of it’s own, above the plat DD40. Your wife’s thoughts are the kicker. Easy decision (or non-decision) I’d say.

I would do the trade. Rolex day dates are one of my favorite watches, and the platinum is exceptional. You will love the weight, and there’s a slick colder feel from PM that I like when you first put them on.

Kwanpen= low blow for Rolex DD! Lol. I don’t think she’s off base though, though I might have said croc leather LV versus regular leather Birkin.

I’d do the trade only because you have the 15500 and like it more.

If you didn’t have the other RO, I wouldn’t do the trade. I assume platinum Daytona is off the table?

The value is very tempting in an inflated market, but value aside, I find RO dials to be more interesting the wear frequency and DD dial gets boring quickly. Material as a novelty fades quickly IMHO as the wearer.

Make the trade since you have a RO already.

I'd get rid of both the ROC and the 15500 and get a 15202.

The ROC would have to go no matter what. The 04:30 date alone gives me shivers... LOL

I do like the platinum DD but not enough to have pulled the trigger myself. Also agree with macrowatch above that the DD might get boring quickly depending on what else is in a collection.

As you have a RO I'd go for the DD.

His AP 26315ST is Stainless Steel not Rose Gold.

The only reason I think this trade is ok is that you have another RO. If this were your only RO I would have voted against trading it for a Rolex.
