How often to give it a rinse

So I just got a new Rolex Day Date and was looking at it last night and noticed some fuzz had gotten on a few links from my sweater I had worn that day. So I gave it a quick rinse in the sink, just ran some water over it and gave it a light go over with my hands. After drying it the watch looked much better, it must have accumulated more dirt that I didn't see!

This got me thinking, would it be alright to give it a quick rinse like that every day? Or once every other day? Or would that start to eventually make the gold lose its luster?

How often do you guys give your watch a quick rinse vs a full cleaning? And how much "quick rinsing" is bad for the overall quality of the watch? I know they're rated to be waterproof, but I think I remember reading somewhere if gold gets wet too often it starts to lose its luster over time

How often do you give yourself a rinse, do you really need to ask us a question like that ?

You can wash it one a year or once every 5 minutes, the watch is waterproof and will come to no harm, but you wife might think you have lost the plot somewhat.

I've just bought a white gold Day Date too, and was wondering about keeping it clean. For me, the issue is that gold is softer than steel and thus scratches easily. Using a stiff brush might be a bad idea. I think I will use just warm water and washing up liquid. Then a rinse in warm water.
Any other suggestions?

You could buy special cleaning tools, such as a baby brush, soft cloth, special soap or just wear it in the shower.

I found after giving it a quick rinse before bed last night made it look excellent. If it isn't harmful at all the metals (I don't think it is, but I'd rather be safe than sorry and ask, since it's quite an expensive watch) I think giving it a quick rinse before bed every night or every other night will probably keep it cleaner and less needing a full clean as often.

Water won't harm it so rinse and wipe as often as you like.

Every night as I find it therapeutic. Just make sure to use a gentle soap, proper drying towel, etc.

This is exactly what I think I'm going to start doing, as it seems the consensus is wherever I read that the watch may lose some luster was wrong -- which is exactly what I was hoping to find out! It made my watch look excellent giving it a quick rinse under the faucet after brushing my teeth, plus I think giving it a quick wash every night will help keep it lasting longer in general as it's much easier to maintain a clean watch than it is to make a dirty watch clean again!

Just glad to hear everyone saying that too much washing wont' end up making the gold lose its luster over the years.

I rinse with a little soap before it goes in the safe - I usually wear my watches two or three days before the next one in the rotation comes out.

Mr BlackHayze

We Brits and the Spanish did not particularly like each other in the 16th Century and we spent a lot of time sinking each others boats. Sir Francis Drake was rather good at it.

There has been a great deal of activity recently with deep sea divers going down and retrieving the gold coins and tricklets which have laid at the bottom of the ocean for the last 350 years.

After a good old fashioned hose down, they were seen to have remained intact and sparkled beautifully. Gold is very durable, so you need not worry about dunking it in soapy water - it will survive.

Regards

Mick

Do you really need to post with a response like that? It's more pointless than the OPs question.

Anyway, back on track. It's an interesting question regarding gold. It's true over a long term gold will change, develop patina and even change color.

Side note: I just picked up two pink gold day-dates from RSC, one was serviced the other just had spring bars replaced. Both watches were listed as yellow gold on the paperwork. I had to have them make all the necessary changes on the paperwork so the history is in good order.

Anyway, I don't think rinsing your watch a couple times a week or even daily will create the 40 year patina these watches developed but still, it's not unreasonable to inquire.

My suggestion is to supplement your simple rinsing with Veraet spray. I was skeptical about it until I bought it, and I have to say it's an incredible cleaning solution! It's quick, easy and literally takes only a few seconds longer than simple rinsing.

I still think your watch will need a more thorough cleaning every once and a while but Veraet combined with regular rinsing will keep your watch looking brand new all the time!!

Once a week...

I keep an old toothbrush in the shower and once a week wear a watch in there and give it a good scrubbing...

Seems to keep them looking good, as I get positive comments, and not noticing any scratches from the bristles...

You guys can wash your watches as often as needed, just make sure that when you do, you dry them with a soft microfiber or 100% cotton towel and not with a paper towel, no matter how soft. If you need to remove grime from the bracelet or clasp you can use an old soft toothbrush and be gentle with it.

Warm soapy baths with a scrub 3-4 times a week for my precious. Me... that's a different story.

Hi,

For me, whenever I have a shower my Oyster does too, as I don't take it off my wrist. Afterwards I rinse the bracelet under cold water and towel it off. Other than that, I don't do anything special. Seems to always have kept my Oysters clean in the past for me.

Im sure you can rinse it daily. You can rinse it while washing your hands. What would make a difference is if you use hot water as I have been told might ruin the gaskets.

OP, wash it as often as you want. I just keep it on during a shower.

Fortunately this is a new watch for you so you can get started the proper way.

It should be rinsed:

Once an hour for a day, then
once a day for a week, then
once a week for a month, then
once a month for a year.

If you do this exactly as outlined, after one year it will be permanently clean and never need rinsing again. *1

Hilo

[1] This method also ensures minimal long-term shrinkage. Win-Win.

I wash mine only when I feel it needs it. For me that is more often in the summer heat and less often in the cooler months. I wouldn't think giving it a rinse often would hurt it.
