Like Pras say - a watch doesn’t totally define a person but is part of a definition of a person. 5270 is absolutely AMAZING!!!

As much as I was smitten by the 5270G today, I don't think I would move a 5131 for one either. The 5131 is just special beyond words.

Wow. Stunning. I am working my way to a 5270. I will Likely get one in 2018 if I can bring myself to part with my 5170G. I always thought I would get the R version of the 5270. Now that I have seen the G a few times I think I like the looks of it better.

Would you tell me why you chose the G over other metals please?

Thanks

Hi CB,

I also love the rose gold variation, you can't go wrong either way. All the (three) 3rd generation of the 5270's are stunning.

Though I do like the idea of putting different color straps on the silver dial G.

Thanks for the reply Hambo. One reason I am drawn to the 5270G is the stealthy characteristics of the white gold. It flies under the radar.

How often do you wear it?

You bet CB! I had intended to wear this watch only for special occasions, but I've worn it dressed down in jeans.

I've gotten nice compliments from non-watch enthusiasts, without the, "how much did you pay for that?" I don't feel like it's an in your face watch and that's why I like wearing it.

Awesome to hear. I am thinking of paring down my collection to the 5270 G or R and a SS Rolex and a IWC BP. I wear a sport coat daily so the 5270 will be my daily wearer. Then switch to the Rolex or IWC on weekends. That’s my plan for 2018. It might be hard to only have one PP but the 5270 is so special it might work.

One thing to consider re: being a one-Patek guy is the time it takes for service. You will be without your 5270 (and therefore your only Patek) for ~6 months.

My two cents, if there is any way you can swing it, is add the 5270 to your 5170. That would be a stellar duo!

Oh. Great point. I did not think about the service problem. I probably could keep the 5170G. Maybe I should get the 5270R then. I think that piece is still in production. The 5270G might not be. I am not sure. Thanks for the input. I really appreciate it.

I also wear mine quite frequently and find that it works in all situations. I have worn it with a t-shirt and jeans just because. No one knows what it is but me and I love it that way. The wrist feel is excellent. You cannot go wrong with the 5270r, my

That sounds awesome. I really did not think that it would be that versatile. I have to slowly start the hunt. Now I have to decide on new or lightly preowned. Any thoughts on that?
Thank you very much.

When I was shopping for my PCC I tried both the 5270 and 5970 and to me there was no comparison. The 5970 just felt right, of course it's subjective.
I find the 5970 cleaner, the leap year and day night aperture clutters the dial .
Both great and you can't go wrong with either one.

I have found that if you are purchasing new from an AD, you can negotiate pretty aggressively. I am not as familiar with the secondary market. Depending on what your sensitivities are, get the best deal that you can.

The R is still in production whereas the two Gs (white and blue dials) are not. The Gs were discontinued at Basel 2017 and IIRC, they were released 1 year before the R, so I’ve heard speculation that the R will be discontinued at the upcoming Basel (2018). Time will tell. Full disclosure, I own the 5270R.

Excellent shot. I went the other way because I liked the leap year and day night indicators. To each his own. I do agree with you, you cannot go wrong with either one. The PCCs are what Patek does best.

Wow. That 5970 is stunning. It does look a little different than the 5270. I see what you mean. Those 2 little circles are omitted.

Just picking up this thread. Now fast forward to March 2024.

I used to have the 5270G non chin blue dial. I thought the sunburst blue with the white dial prints were beautiful! I let go of it because I find the watch thick and large (I have a 7 inch wrist). Felt like a pop swatch and once I had an opportunity to try on a 5970, at first I found the dial clustered. But over time, I grew towards the 5970 and liked less and less the 5270 as I couldn’t unsee the imbalance of the subdials below the center pignon and the large casing and protruding lugs. I agree that the in-house movement is superior in every way but I finally parted with it last year.

I just pulled the trigger yesterday on a trade-in for a 5970R (gave up my 5980/1A blue which has an amazing dial, the blue gradiant on the 5980 is to me more beautiful than on a 5711 but I let go of it because the 5980 is too bulky for me, and I also had to give up another beautiful piece, the blue one year only production 5230P world time (instead of my 5130P as I prefer the contrasting dial of the blue center and silver outer ring and the rounded shape of the 5130P case) plus hefty cash addition). But I have no regrets, sometimes consolidation is a good thing. I already have and still keeping my 5711 blue and 5130P so I got rid of 2 redundancies (a nautilus and a world time which i have double pieces of and fighting for wrist time).

All in all, it’s hard to argue from an aesthetic point of view between the 5270 and 5970. Both have their pull and push factors. But I am glad to have finally reached this part of my journey. The 5970 reference is to me perfection at it’s best. But you have to put the watch on your wrist and get the one that resonates with you. If you have an 8 inch wrist I would understand that a 5970 would look lost on your wrist. This was the reason I let go of 2 of my 3940s as they look really small on my wrist and never got wrist time but from an aesthetic perspective, the 3940s are also perfection pieces.

I have owed over 30 different Pateks at different points in time since I purchased my first Patek in the year 2000. And our tastes keep evolving. It’s the pleasure of the journey. At the end, someone quoted, the best watch is the one that is on your wrist and that gets ample wrist time for you to enjoy.

Thanks for the useful feedback Pingparme. I noticed as well that a bigger watch than my wrist can wear (with all the subjectivity included in that process) also bothered me on the long run. I enjoyed the journey, glad that I went that route, even if I ended getting rid of them. It's also part of knowing ourselves better in terms of watches we will enjoy or not on a daily basis.

What’s a chin on a watch?

It’s the variation of the 5270 3rd series. The 2nd series had chin meaning at 6 o’clock position, you see a semi circle protruding below like a “chin”
